network-manager (Ubuntu)
Incomplete

Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

The network icon in the top corner of the screen says 'Wired Connection' but my computer does not have a wired connection active.
When i click the Icon it shows both 'Wired Connection' and my Wireless Network as active.

Its not a major problem as i can still access the internet, but i cannot see the 'Wireless Strength Meter'.

Hi

Could you tell me

 - What version of network-manager you have installed
 - Which version of Ubuntu you are running (Feisty? Edgy? Dapper?)
 - Could you also say which wireless and wired network cards you have.

If could you attach the output of the lspci command:

  lspci -v > lspci.txt

Then attach lspci.txt here.

Cheers

Hi, The network manager should be the latest, no updates in update manager.
Running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

Here are my Network Devices (from lspci).

06:05.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g]
802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

06:06.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1510 PC card Cardbus Controller
06:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

If its of any help, i havent seen the bug since i reported it. When it did
appear i had hibernated the computer the night before, so that might be
somehow related? Ill look into that for you.

I've been hunting around for similar issues so far I found a couple, and some comments that seem to describe exactly your situ.

1. [feisty] nm-applet claims wired connection when its wireless #83178 -- similar symptom but they don't mention suspend/hibernate affecting it.
2. Then there's this comment https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/40125/comments/49 by IDon'tWantNoStupidHomepage in #40125 which seems to match your description, later he is advised to open a separate issue by Constantine Evans who said he was affected too, but I don't think one was opened. We should try to contact them both and refer them here.

Adam could you please confirm if hibernate is the cause? If so I will update the title and try to contact those guys.

I can confirm that. I had hibernated the computer last night and it
appeared this morning.

However, i have found a solution for it on my computer.
When it comes up, all i have to do is goto terminal and type 'sudo modprobe
ndiswrapper' and the error disappears.

Hope the info can help those other two people.

So can you confirm: when this happens and before you run modprobe type lsmod in the terminal - is the ndiswrapper module showing as loaded or not?

Unfortuantely i cant fully confirm that for you yet.
I 'resumed' the computer, and opened firefox. As soon as i opened firefox
the connection said 'Wired connection Disconnected' then Asked my for
keyring password and connected to my wireless network.

I had not typed 'sudo modprobe ndiswrapper' so i think the module must of
already been loaded.

Ok,next confirmation.
lsmod does show that ndiswrapper is loaded.
Noticed, when i click the network connection icon, it shows the wired
connection as selected but it is grey.

Hi

I am fairly certain now that this is the same problem as reported in #83178. An upstream fix is already available. I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of that bug.

Thanks.
