Bug Description

I have a media keyboard that provides Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute keys. They map to XF86AudioRaiseVolume, XF86AudioLowerVolume and XF86AudioMute respectively. While Raise and Lower trigger an OSD (through kmilo), XF86AudioMute does not. Deactivating kmilo leaves the same situation, I can use Raise and Lower for shortcuts in kwin (controlling the master channel). XF86AudioMute can be assigned as a shortcut, but pressing it does not trigger the action, regardless if it is mute in kmix or play in amarok and whatever else. This might be related to bug #58751 although that might be an issue with the sound system and not so much with the shortcut, since it shows an OSD in that bug report.

I have the suspicion that the key is caught by some other process and not passed on to kde for evaluation, but I am not sure.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you execute the command 'showkey' in a virtual terminal (tty1 through tty4) and report back what the results of pressing your mute button are? Thanks in advance.

since reporting the bug, I have tried putting in a live cd for feisty (the install cd) and under that it works. I installed feisty from the last beta before it was released. I tried gutsy as well and it works too.
The good news is that it is probably not an issue that will come up again. I still would like to get this sorted out without a reinstall.

I migrated my home directory from Gentoo when moving to Kubuntu, but I did not think it was imporant. I will see if it is also a problem with a newly created user, hold on.

No luck with a new user. Pressing Vol+ and Vol- triggers a response (in this case "KMix does not seem to be running, not sure why, but kmix is running).
The question that still evades me is why I can set Mute as a shortcut (i.e. the key press event comes through) but it does not trigger anything.

Please close this bug, I cannot reproduce it in gutsy.
