Bug Description

Update manager fails while fetching new packages -- specifically stating it is unable to install the xubuntu-desktop package. After doing bug report the upgrade process wants to continue with the upgrade. Not really comfortable with an upgrade process continuing without a critical package.

Could you be a tad bit more specific what you mean by "upgrade". Did you upgrade to Precise, and from what distro did you upgrade from?

This was so long ago that I am partially guessing here, but, if I
remember correctly I believe that update manager was set to allow
automatic upgrade when a new version is released and when it tried to do
so it ran into the bug which was automatically reported. I was
oblivious to this for a while but eventually caught on. As I am on the
LTS version and will probably only upgrade when the next LTS is released
I eventually disabled the automatic upgrade option in the update manager
and have had no more issues. It updates the system now instead of
trying to upgrade to a newer version. Thanks...

The release upgrader was unable to calculate the upgrade path because the package thunar-data which you appear to have installed from a PPA.
