guess i have the same bug with 13.04 also.
additional information : when clicking the "export video" button in export pop-up window, i get an alert pop-up that says "you are not allowed to write in this directory, please choose another place" (well it says its equivalent in french, so i m not sure of the exact translation) (this writting permission could also explain the "save" problem ?)
if this is relevant to the same bug listed above, fine, if not, please let me know, i ll open another bug ticket.
cheers

Hello,

Thanks for the mail. The bug I encountered is the same like you describe.
It's still not fixed with the latest updates on my desktop. I use openshot
with with ubuntu 12.10 on my laptop now to edit movies. No problems there.

Tommy

Openshot uses the python os.access method to check if a user has write permissions to the export folder. I assume Ubuntu must have changed something which affects that.

Same error here. Only way to prevent work loss and export video was to save it on to usb memory stick with fat32 file system.

An new version (aka 1.4.4) will be out about the two bugs linked with
Ubuntu 13.04 and the last version of Blender (aka 2.6.7) where they have
still changed their Python API (and who breaks yet the animated title
editor). Andy should take a look the next week if he has installed Linux
mint Olivia. Currently, we are all working on the 2.0.0 version. :-)

I don't use Ubuntu so can't debug/test on that, but it works ok on Linux Mint 15 which is based on 13.04, and uses the same Python version as Ubuntu. Need someone who can debug Python who uses 13.04 to help with this one.

I found a solution. If the video is exported to the web, you create a video file in the temporary folder.

To me it works

I've tried this on a fresh 13.04 install (on a virtual machine) and couldn't reproduce it. So unless someone can provide some details under what conditions this error occurs then we are a bit stuck.

Andreas Korth (andreaskorth) wrote :

Because I am also affected, I tried to play around a bit, with some kind of successful result. Following scenario:
- imported a video from a dv-Camera (Container: AVI; Videoformat: DV, 720*576; Audioformat: PCM, Stereo)
- dragged Stream to Track 2
- deleted something of the video using Razor Tool
- tried to export with profile "DVD", Target "DVD-PAL", Video Profile "DV/DVD Widescreen PAL", Quality "High"

The problem occured after I tried to export the Video to ~/, to ~/Videos, and to an external drive with NTFS file system, mounted ad /media/andreas/NTFS_DRIVE/. Because the topic folder permissions came into my mind, I created a sub-folder in ~/Videos/ and to that location the export worked.

But it doesn't seem to be a permission problem (coupled with a bug, which determines permissions wrong), because I tried to set some different permissions and it was everytime possible to export to a subfolder of ~/Videos/. By the way, saving a project also seems to be affected. If I try to save a project to a location to which exporting is not possible, the project is also not stored. Even though it works in ~/Videos/foobar/. But if the project is stored there, the Video is also exported to that location. and only there, regardless of the selected location.

Thus, I summarise: to some folders, exporting works as expected, to some other folders it doesn't.

@ Andreas - Thank you for the info. Are you able to test the latest source code? There is a change there that should fix the saving issue, and hopefully will also fix the exporting problem.

@ Andy
I have the same observation as Andreas. It is not possible to save in a upper level folder, but it is possible in a sub-folder.
I wanted to try the latest source code but I cannot find it. I found this page :
https://code.launchpad.net/~openshot.code/+recipe/openshot-daily
There is only i386 and not amd64, but I tried the following one :
"openshot - 1.4.3+0+740+66+301~precise1.deb"
The problem is still there.
In fact what is curious is that I cannot save in any folder of the shortlist presented. But I can if I browse.
For instance, I tried to save on my Desktop while choosing it in the presented shortlist : it didn't work. I browsed through the folders and chose my exactly same Desktop and it worked.

To summarize: it works in every folders I tested (local or external drive) while browsing among folders ("others"), but it does not if you choose this same folder in the shortlist proposed.

The problem with saving in a folder in the shortlist soundlike a well known GTK bug, where no matter what folder you choose, it gets saved to your home folder.

No one ever gave us any feedback on whether the latest source code works, so as I can't reproduce I don't expect to do anything else about it.
