Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub

This bug is marked as private because it affects unreleased hardware. This bug occurred when I testing Feisty Desktop IA32e on a Santa Rosa machine with the following specs:

Santa Rosa CRB
Crestline(B0) ICH8M(B0)
Merom(B1) 2.0GHz
EM64T 4M 667MHz
2048M DDR2 667
80G Sata

I use manually partitioning during the installation, and select (hd0) as the destination for install GRUB. But after installation, the system cannot boot up from the hard disk directly. So I must insert the Feisty install CD and select "Boot from the first hard disk" to boot into Feisty.

Hi Xiaoyang,

I assume you installed using the Live CD. It would be helpful if you could attach the installer log to this bug report. You may need to repeat the install if you no longer have access to the installed partition. See details on attaching installer logs here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs

Thanks!

Hi Henrik,

Yes I installed using the Live CD. I am very luck that the installed partition is still there :-) Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

Xiaoyang,

Can you try to install again using one of the daily Live CD images, and let us know if the error still occurs? They can be downloaded from the following location:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/

There have been recent changes to grub that we believe fixes this error.

Ok. I'll try.

Is it the same to Gutsy Tribe 2? I tried Tribe 2 x86_64, it still has the same problem.

By the way, every time when I view a launchpad page, it will show a dialog box with the title "Security Information", and I must click "Yes" to pass. Is there a solution to avoid this?

Thanks

Setting the bootable flag to the boot partition can solve the problem.
So maybe this need to be added to the installer.

Xiaoyang, does this still happen in Gutsy Tribe 3?

This still happens in Gutsy Tribe 3 when I install the root filesystem
of Ubuntu x86_64 on a logic partition.

This can be fixed by adding "bootable" flag to the extended partition
which contains the logic partition Ubuntu was installed.

I just wanted to note that I am working on this; the fiddly bit is converting GRUB device names back into Linux device names so that we can run sfdisk et al on them. However, I'll be on holiday for the next week, so I won't be able to make any more progress during that time. I'll pick it up again when I get back. In the meantime, there's no need to retest, as I'm definitely aware of the bug's existence.

Thanks!

Kyle, I believe you had identified this as a BIOS bug and are looking into a workaround -- can you update the bug report with your findings?

I think this should fix this bug, though I would like confirmation:

grub-installer (1.24ubuntu2) gutsy; urgency=low

  * Mark the partition to which GRUB is being installed as bootable, or
failing that the first available primary partition on the disk to which
GRUB is being installed (LP: #14244).

Could you confirm whether you're still seeing this problem with a current daily build (Tribe 5 is too old to contain this fix)? There is one more piece to this puzzle I know I need to fill in, namely that partman-auto no longer needs to force the root partition to be bootable as the bootloader installers will now simply ensure that there is a bootable partition which is good enough. However, I don't think this should affect you.

I didn't do this precisely the same way as you suggested, since I don't think it matters that the bootable flag be set on the extended partition. As I understand the BIOS rules, any primary should do fine.

Oh, note that at the moment this is only testable with the alternate install CD. The desktop CD is currently broken due to unionfs issues.

I currently do not have CRB, so I used a HP laptop (Compaq 2510p) instead. After select "Install in Text mode", the screen turns black, and the "Choose Language" menu do not appear.

So I change to use T61, and still can not be installed:
