Bug Description

The computer freezes randomly unless I have suspended and awaken the system at least once since reboot. A freeze can, in general, be expected to occur within an hour of a fresh reboot. The system has froze after a suspend-awakening, but only twice during the past 6 months.

The system in it's frozen state isn't affected by Alt-SysRq-R-E-I-S-U-B, which is why I am reporting it as a bug concerning the Linux Kernel itself.

The bug first appeared in 12.10.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I've added the 'kernel-fixed-upstream' tag and marked it 'Confirmed'.

Here's what happened:
Boot with new kernel. Freeze after a while.
Boot again. New freeze.
Boot again and suspend/resume. Didn't wait for result.
Boot again. Didn't freeze for a long time. At least 30 min. Didn't wait any longer.
Boot again. Didn't freeze for a long time. At least 30 min. Didn't wait any longer.
Boot again. Started trying to rip a CD while waiting/testing. Freeze occurred.

Alt-SysRq-R-E-I-S-U-B continues to have no effect during freezes

'cat /proc/version' returns the following:
Linux version 3.9.0-030900-generic (apw@gomeisa) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #201304291257 SMP Mon Apr 29 16:58:15 UTC 2013

Ubuntu recently froze while I was transcoding using Handbrake. I had suspended/awakened it previously. This is the third time for as long as I've counted that this happens. The processor was at 100% usage for six hours and it has a mild overclock, but I doubt that's the cause.

Tormod Hellen, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc2-saucy/ and advise on if the issue is resolved?
