Bug Description

I couldn't get the backlight to work after I upgraded to 13.04.

WORKAROUND: The only grub lines that seem to work are these:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi="

I tried changing the grub parameters, and after several trys, nothing. I was asked to run grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/* and got the results of:

maxo@Dayman:~$ grep . /sys/class/backlight/*/*
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness:9
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness:9
grep: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/device: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness:9
grep: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/power: Is a directory
grep: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/subsystem: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/type:firmware
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness:976
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/bl_power:0
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness:976
grep: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/device: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness:976
grep: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/power: Is a directory
grep: /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/subsystem: Is a directory
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/type:raw

But using the Fn Keys, you can only adjust it a little, like from full brightness to about half. To add something else, with the other parameters when I adjust with the Fn Keys, the brightness bubble you get on the top right of your screen doesn't appear.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Max Oropeza, thank you for updating your BIOS. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

So, I was able to install the kernel version 3.11.0-999-generic. Once I rebooted, there was no difference. I changed the GRUB to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi='!Windows 2012" AND
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor"

acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor AND quiet splash acpi_osi='!Windows 2012 made it possible to lower the brightness to about halfway but it doesn't show the dialog that says the screen brightness is lowering. But quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor shows the dialog but doesn't lower the screen brightness. I left the GRUB with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" for the meantime.

When I'd do a fresh install starting with 12.04 (that's when I got the laptop I'm using now) the backlight wouldn't work but it was just a simple solution by changing the GRUB line to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor". So when the time came to update to 12.10 it happened again and that was the solution again, but not with 13.04.

Hello, I filled a buf report on Launchpad about a backlight issue (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1173961 ). ONe of
the people there suggested to file an upstream bug report and the first
step was to email the maintainer. I don't know what to say since I'm
still sort of knew to Linux and Ubuntu. If you need any additional
information please ask and I'll do the best I can.

Max Oropeza, as per the previously noted URL, it advises you to fill out all the below information and send to appropriate mailing list (which would be linux-acpi in this case):
[1.] One line summary of the problem:
Paste the downstream bug title.

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
Paste the Bug Description and a link to your Launchpad bug report.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel): Please note, Kernel.org uses a different keyword system then the Ubuntu Tags system.

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):
While booted into the newest upstream mainline kernel only, please execute the following in a terminal and paste the results:
cat /proc/version

[5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt)
This is only relevant if you had a oops crash (ex. flashing Caps Lock light). While booted into the newest upstream mainline kernel only, if you have a kernel oops, one may consult http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt . If this is too daunting please ask for help in your bug report, and of the Ubuntu community.

[6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the problem (if possible)
This is for advanced community members. If you feel comfortable enough to do this, please do it. It is not crtical if this is beyond your skill level.

[7.] Environment
Please execute the following in a terminal, and paste the results:
lsb_release -rd

[7.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here)
While booted into the newest upstream mainline kernel only, this is found in the directory:
/usr/src/linux-headers-<VERSION>/scripts

where <VERSION> is the version of the kernel you are using, found in the directory /usr/src. You may run the script by changing to the directory via a terminal, and paste the results:
sh ver_linux

[7.2.] Processor information (from /proc/cpuinfo):
While booted into the newest upstream mainline kernel only, execute the following in a terminal, and paste the results:
cat /proc/cpuinfo

[7.3.] Module information (from /proc/modules):
While booted into the newest upstream mainline kernel only, execute the following in a terminal, and paste the results:

So this is booted without the acpi_backlight=vendor option, right?
And if you adjust the brightness level through the brightness file, does
it work?

And this is when you add the acpi_backlight=vendor cmdline?

Thanks,

Ok, now there was a change. In *acer-wmi*, I put:

and there was no change at all.

But when I went to *intel_backlight*, I got:
> root@Dayman:/sys/class/backlight/acer-wmi# cd
> /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
> root@Dayman:/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight# cat max_brightness

and when I put echo 5 > brightness, the screen went super low, the same
with echo 7. I tried changing the brightness using the FN keys and it
went at full brightness and once again I can't lower the brightness to
about half. Same problems as before but *intel_backlight* is the one
that actually changed brightness.

The intel_backlight's max_brightness could be very high so the value 5
or 7 are almost identical to 0, you can try some larger values like 500
or 2000 etc.

Your system needs some quirk I suppose. BTW, your system only have two
backlight interfaces acer-mi and intel_backlight, is it booting with
acpi_backlight=vendor option?

Sorry about the lateness, school just started ad I'm kinda busy now. I
did what you said and it was working if I used high numbers like 200.
Also it is booting with this

because that's the only way I've made the light go down.
