I have this same issue on my Dell XPS 13 ultrabook with Intel HD 4000 graphics. I believe that the 3.8.0-19 kernel is causing the issue, if I boot to a previously installed kernel everything works fine. Using the 3.8.0-19 kernel I get nothing on the laptop screen, if I plug something into the display port I will get a X session there. Using the function key to switch between displays does not result in anything being displayed on the laptop screen.

I also have the XPS and have found that the above technique resolves the
issue entirely.
