I can see the resize triggered by adding the second screen, no errors are reported though. Does the error persist after installation?

If so it would be good to rerun with drm.debug=6 appended to the kernel commandline and attach the dmesg from boot (with the black screen) and the output of intel_reg_dumper (found in intel-gpu-tools).

Diego Carrera Gallego,
Please run the tool sudo intel_reg_dumper once when the screen is working correctly, and once with it showing the blank screen / out-of-range error, and attach both files. Comparing the register settings for them may highlight where the problem is.

I just upgraded from Kubuntu 12.10 to 13.04, and have been struck by this. Unless I attach my external monitor (via HDMI) during boot, my laptop's LCD goes blank after showing the "Kubuntu" logo for a few seconds. I know it's getting to the KDM login screen, since if I move my mouse down+right, then click, the system powers down. (The shutdown button is at the extreme bottom right.)

Attached is the output of 'intel_reg_dumper' on my system, after successfully logging in (booting with monitor attached).

I've had the same issue but upon waiting for kubuntu to load i wait once it goes black enter my password and it goes into kubuntu with my screen fully loading so i assume it would be an issue with the kdm or whatever it is to get to the login screen.

I am also getting this. I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.10 64bit to 13.4. System asks me for my password at boot ( it normal), then when I log in it goes to a black screen with a flashing white underscore. I can type here but no commands are executed (from what I can tell...). If I press alt and f2 I get a prompt that I can log into and execute commands. After the upgrade everything worked fine for probably about 5 restarts.

I tried, and as with Ron A. in comment #5 to this bug, I, too can 'blindly' log in to my KDE desktop after entering my password. (So basically, the screen goes completely off, then KDM comes up). After logging in, the screen becomes active again.

I have a Lenovo 580, and on it too the screen goes black after the boot screen. I press Fn + UpArrow to brighten it. I assume the screen brightness is being set to zero every time I reboot.

I found :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/79983/screen-brightness-resets-to-minimum-after-every-reboot

The file /etc/rc.local add before line *exit 0*:

*echo 5 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
exit 0 *

Where *5* is the brightness level from 0 to 10

In fact, you have to set your brightness as you want. Then you open the
file :

*/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/*actual_brightness

And you replace the 5 with the number you will find in actual_brightness

You must open rc.local as root : so : you open a term : CTRL+ALT+T

Then you type : sudo nautilus

you will find the file rc.local in subdirectory etc

It was fine for me. Hope you will success

Good luck,

If any problem, send a mail

Bill Kendrick (nbs) wrote : Re: black screen on lenovo g580 and ubuntu 13.04

FYI, I noticed that if I use the Fn+F4 key on my laptop (which is the 'lower screen brightness' function key) and drop it to 0% (as reported by a screen brightness overlay in KDE, if I'm logged in), my backlight goes completely off, to the point that I cannot see anything on the screen (similar to the problem I have when I boot up without an external monitor plugged in). Pressing Fn+F5 ('raise screen brightness'), it comes back on, of course.

So the "echo ### > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"-in-/etc/rc.local trick sounds like it will work. I'll test it later today, and report back.

I can confirm this bug also happens on a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.04 using a custom COMPAL notebook with Intel i915GM graphics driver.

To me the workaround is just press Fn+F5 (brightness up) when the screen goes blank, then the login screen appears normally.

Also if I boot into recovery mode and choose "Resume" on the recovery options the screen is visible right away without having to press Fn+F5.

All workarounds already presented on this bug report also work, so it is definitely the same bug.

new4u (new4u) wrote :

indeed, this solution worked for me, too. Just to add: on my N581, the value for full brightness is 100. So, my file looks now like this:

The file /etc/rc.local :

echo 100 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
exit 0

Maybe this can make life easier for some others, too. Thank you @Erwan DUEDAL for posting this solution!

Diego Carrera Gallego, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-intel REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
