gnome dict applet does not work with scim

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

I was unable to type any complex characters in the gnome dictionary applet even when scim is installed and working in other applications (tried scim-anthy).

Since the applet already has setup for dictionaries that use complex sctipts (Thai), this might be a problem for users wishing to use such dictionaries.

So while all other GTK/GNOME applications work fine with scim, and the gnome dictionary applet doesn't, it's still scim's fault?

I remember seeing silmilar things in Debian (around GNOME 2.12), and I don't use the dictionary applet anymore.

I can test, on Debian at least, if some GNOME maintainers show interest in fixing this bug. But if such bugs are just reassigned back to scim without any explanation whatsoever, I won't bother, and this bug can rot under scim forever.

unless there is an explanation what scim does wrong that it works with everything but the applet it looks like that applet's fault.

the applet works fine without scim, why would it be due to it?

Because everything else works fine with scim, just the applet does
not. You can type only English in the applet not CJK or the like.

reassigning to scim, the desktop team has not a lot of knowledge of what scim does exactly and how it can be confused. Could anybody from scim explain what the applet is doing wrongly and reassign to gnome-applets if the bug is due to it?

I'm not a programmer, and even if I am, without looking at the code I won't have much insight.

But for those programmers there who may be interested in this bug, there is a bug in GTK+ (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331369) that has similar symptoms -- only one application doesn't work (gedit) with input methods, but English works fine.

That bug was fixed in 2.10.10, and feisty has 2.10.11, so it's not likely the same bug, I am just mentioning it hoping it can be helpful.

One obvious thing to try, of course, is to see if the bug still exists with a different input method.

Thank you for reporting. I think this may be fixed in 1.4.9 which is about to be released in Karmic. Please verify.
