Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Hi

Rhythmbox, being the default audio player for ubuntu should provide more default internet radio stations. Other player like banshee and exaile already do it and I gess it's a matter of including a list of URLS.

Thanks

The ones provided by both programs aren't valid? I assume they need mp3 installed then... :/

I haven't tried them yet so maybe they don't work. I'll try to have a look at them this weekend.

Rigth now the current ogg radio are added via a patch in the debian/ directory. So it is quite doable to add a few more.... It is enough to add the one that are listed in the abve URL to close this bug ????
If it is the case, I'll be happy to do so...

This is not a RhythmPlayer or Ubuntu bug though, is it? More streams could be added quite easily. I also use Mandriva 2008 on another computer and RhythmPlayer there comes with more stations by default than Ubuntu. However, not everyone likes the same thing and the obvious question that shines through from previous comments is who chooses the defaults?

What would be more useful, IMHO, is a better directory of radio stations so that it is easier to find and add the type of music that you like. Perhaps that already exists, but I have not found it?

I've created a rhythmdb xml file that contains all the iTunes radio stations. I don't know how often those stations change but if you want to try it out, the file is here http://usefultreats.googlepages.com/rhythmdb.xml.

That's a nice list, Ericajoy. It's genreless and contains some duplicates and some non-standard characters but it's nice to have a list of radio stations in rhythmbox, which I'm actually using now.

The initial rhythmbox iradio playlist is stored here:

/usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/iradio/iradio-initial.pls

Adding here should allow not trouncing podcasts in a user's setup.

Did you build this by hand? Is this list is available online?

Thanks.

it works (if you clear the gconf settings for RB) on a test account I have, but there are "only" 17 stations... maybe we could add more by looping into http://dir.xiph.org/by_format/Ogg_Vorbis (but I don't really have good enough knowledge of scripting) and wgetting the results? I think that if someone has the skill to make a small script that parses that page, it could be interesting to the upstream devs. They could maintain a list of ~220 radio stations in vorbis and drop the rest.

In any case, I know it's a bit nitpicking, but since I see CBC radio one and two (canada), maybe we could add Radio-Canada première chaîne and deuxième chaîne (= CBC, in French):

http://ms2.radio-canada.ca/PremiereChaine.ogg.m3u
http://ms2.radio-canada.ca/EspaceMusique.ogg.m3u

I tried writing a script that grabs as much radio stations as possible from that website, then spits out a rhythmbox iradio-initial.pls in the current working directory. Maybe it can help, so I will attach it here.

Limitations:
- cpu intensive, it seems
- it is written in horrible ways and it shows
- the xiph directory changes all the time, it seems that the sorting is based on the last radio that changed track title
- limited to 5 pages (100 stations) because the xiph website doesn't seem to want to display more
- does not check for duplicates (caused by the ever changing xiph directory)
- only uses the first "genre" tag

Fixed some bugs and made the download process separate from the parsing to lessen the chances of duplicates a little, so the newest version is there:

bzr branch http://code.ecchi.ca/rhythmbox-radio-finder/

It still doesn't check for duplicates though. Maybe a python dictionary instead of lists would help.

Could someone please make rhythmbox save the radio stations list after adding one station ? I use to add national radio stations one by one and rythmbox often crashes, loosing all this work. I know it shouldnt be much. Thanks,

Ubuntu jaunty alpha 5 here.

Shows 21 radio stations by default:
$ cat /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/iradio/iradio-initial.pls | grep -c ^title
21

By the way, why don't you try and download from Applications > Add/Remove.. this application: Tunapie
(Also "ubuntu restricted extras" for mp3 and other goodies)

Then Applications > Sound & Video > Tunapie and File > Properties > Audio player: totem
You should be able to listen and browse a lot of radio stations. :)

In my opinion, it's really pointless keeping to keep this bug open, someone could suggest to the developers to provide and maintain an xml list of Radio stations (similar to mobile-broadband-provider-info).

If you disagree you can always re-open this bug, but please do it
upstream as well: http://bugzilla.gnome.org :)
