By the way, the system stuff above shows the kernel versions as 3.8.0-5 because I downgraded from the kernel with the issue.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex,

Just out of curiosity, how did you install the 3.8.0-6 kernel? Did you use the meta package (eg linux-image-generic) to ensure you installed both the linux-image and linux-image-extra package? Based on your bug description, it sounds like you're missing the linux-image-extra package, ie http://launchpadlibrarian.net/131263814/linux-image-extra-3.8.0-6-generic_3.8.0-6.13_i386.deb

If that's not the issue, maybe try giving the latest 3.8.0-7.14 kernel a test. It was just rebased to the final v3.8 upstream release which you confirm to be working. The 3.8.0-7.14 kernel looks to be still waiting to be promoted to the release pocket in the archive so it may be a few hours until it's officially available.

I updated the kernel to 3.8.0-6 with the Ubuntu update manager and I don't have linux-image-extra installed. The linux-image-generic package is at 3.8.0-5 and it doesn't look like it was updated.

@Alex, can you try applying the latest updates and install the linux-image-extra package?

If needed, I can also give you directions on how to do this from a terminal.

Thanks in advance.
