FYI:

'apt-get instal tomcat5.5'l works for me.
Tried to install tomcat5.5-admin with Synaptic - wich fails (same error as above). apt-get install tomcat5.5-admin works.

Try to
export $JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
(or whichever version of Java you want to use)

Does that work for you guys?

Exporting JAVA_HOME didn’t work for us; installing sun-java6-jdk solved the problem, though.

Did you have any JDK installed before installing tomcat5.5 package? If not, this is probably same as bug #179447.

This bug is about failure to upgrade to Ubuntu 7.04, not failure to install in the first place (which is bug 179447). Lots of comments here are about this second bug.

The only thing I can reproduce on a hardy -> intrepid upgrade is a unnecessary question about /etc/tomcat5.5/catalina.policy upgrading.

This is because tomcat5.5 uses /etc as a place to autogenerate the catalina.policy file. /etc should not be used for that, catalina.policy should be moved to /var/cache/tomcat5.5 instead.

Thierry Carrez (ttx) wrote :

As a smaller patch more compatible with FeatureFreeze, just avoid installing /etc/tomcat5.5/catalina.policy since it will be regenerated whenever tomcat5.5 is started. This should avoid the remaining upgrade questions.
