Bug Description

The system kind of "freezes" randomly (opening Unity Dash, browsing with Firefox, opening LibreOffice). Moving the mouse or using keyboard shortcuts that result in a graphical reaction don't produce an immediate result but eventually an result at a later time (sometimes up to 5 or more minutes later). Sometimes there is also problems with the graphical output (parts of the screen become black). To get out of this "freeze" it helps to switch to a console (ctrl+alt+f1) which works almost immediately (sometimes takes a few seconds but faster than anything else), then switch back using ctrl+alt+f7. The system works as expected again.

This is on an Acer Aspire 4935G with NVIDIA graphics (proprietary driver).

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Just to say, I think I've got the same bug: it seems to have started around a month ago when I installed a large batch of new updates, including Firefox. I tried switching to Chrome, but it still happens so imagine it's something in Unity.

I'm using a little laptop so may notice it more than others.

So I tested Linux Kernel 3.8.2 from mainline for a while and it seems like this bug is gone now. I had to install proprietary NVIDIA drivers to get anything else than a black display after suspend but that problem is already report as https://bugs.launchpad.net/nouveau/+bug/1111884.

Kernel 3.8.2 seems to fix this bug for me.

Hendrik Knackstedt, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>
