Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

I configure the printer Lexmark Optra E310 and select the recommended driver (postcript) without problems.
When I print the test page, a corrupt image is printed (only a line with estrange caracters)

Please set up your printer using the PPD from your manufacturer that came with it instead of the generic PostScript driver that comes with Ubuntu.

Thanks Pascal De Vuyst,

"set up your printer using the PPD from your manufacturer that came with it"
How can i do it?I should install the drivers from http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:0:0:0 ?

Your printer supports the following languages: PostScript Level 2, PCL5e and PCL6.
PostScript printers only need a printer specific PPD file to make them work. Please check the driver CD-ROM that came with your printer for PPD files. PPD files are just text files that can be used on both Windows and Linux.
If you can't find a PPD file for your printer you should still be able to use one of the generic PCL5e or PCL6 drivers. To do this click System -> Administration -> Printers, add new printer, select make: Generic and model: PCL5e or PCL6 and one of the drivers.

Hello Pascal de Vuyst,

not work. I choose PLC5e and PLC6 with all combinations (ljet4, gutenprint, hpijs...) but the printer not works.
In http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-Optra_E310 says that the printer is 100% supported with driver postcripst.
Do you need any log?

Thank you

Can you attach your CUPS error log and the output of the printingbug info script with the "Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended)" driver installed.

@fheinonen
This is exactly the same PPD as included into Ubuntu Feisty as recommended driver for which the bug reporter Javier Jardón has reported the problem (see printingbuginfo.txt).

That's odd. Openprinting database claims that it works perfectly.

the error_log shows a smooth filtering. So the problem seems that the PCL produced by Ghostscript is not 100% compatible with the printer.

Try to switch to GPL Ghostscript via

sudo apt-get install gs-gpl
sudo update-alternatives --config gs

and choose "gs-gpl" in the upcoming menu. Are you able to print now?

Can you try with the new gs-gpl packages?

Download all packages from

http://www.linux-foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/gs-gpl/binary/

and do

sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb

to replace your ESP Ghostscript by the new GPL Ghostscript.

Due to change of Artifex' license policy to do the head development of Ghostscript under GPL and the merger of the extra functionality of ESP Ghostscript (ESP Ghostscript is discontinued now), the packages gs-esp and gs-afpl got obsolete. They are both replaced by gs-gpl, version 8.60 or newer. I have already done a first test package:

For Gutsy download all packages from

http://www.linux-foundation.org/~till/tmp/ubuntu/gutsy/gs-gpl/binary/

and do

sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb

to replace your ESP and AFPL Ghostscript by the new merged GPL Ghostscript.

If you are running Feisty or older download the files from

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printing/esp-gpl-ghostscript-merge/

into the same directory. Then do

sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get build-dep gs-esp gs-gpl
dpkg-source -x gs-gpl_8.60.dfsg.1-0ubuntu1.dsc
cd gs-gpl-8.60.dfsg.1
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
cd ..
sudo dpkg -i *gs-esp*.deb *gs-afpl*.deb *gs-gpl*.deb

Answer every question which appears with "y", so that all needed packages get installed.

Or try the distribution-independent binary package from

http://www.openprinting.org/download/printing/esp-gpl-ghostscript-merge/README

The new grand unified GPL Ghostscript will make it into Ubuntu soon, after

- Agreeing on the name with Debian: "gs-gpl" or simply "gs"
- Adding the C header files to libgs-gpl-dev
- Fixing upstream bug 689237: http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689237

Please tell us your results with the test packages.

Hello,

I try the test packages and the printer not found.
BUT I installed the printer in other computer with kubuntu 7.04 and it works "out of the box". Maybe a hardware problem in the other machine?

Thanks and sorry for the delay.

Please provide the output of the printingbuginfo script (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrintingBugInfoScript) from the Kubuntu machine.

I'm running, or trying to run, an Optra E310 in 7.10 (I think).

I had selected the Optra E310 driver. No go: dies with the "inode permission" bug.
I tried stopping apparmor, with no better luck.

I then tried "generic PostScript foomatic" driver: no go.

I then tried "generic PostScript" (non-foomatic) driver.

This sort of works, but a fair number of documents make
the printer light blink for a few seconds, then the yellow
printer error light blanks, then the rest is silence.
The job is then marked as "completed". I would guess this
means the generic PS driver is buggy.

On one of the above, dmesg gets:

[17972.993541] lp0: ECP mode

messages. Not sure if that's good or bad.

Suggestions/recommendations welcome.

Robert
