i can confirm this behaviour, no matter what you select, always use circles, as attachment goes a log showing what happens when i unckeck and then check the use of circles from gdmsetup.

I checked the source and it seems that my patch was not applied in gutsy. Sebastien, can you look for this?

the patch was only changing the standard login screen, not the graphical one, I've attached a new patch upstream now

Fix seems to have been released in Gutsy. I get the * character now.

gdm (2.19.8-0ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low
  * New upstream version:
   - Set invisible character to '*' for gdmgreeter.

Running Gutsy and just applied the most recent updates. As of today, I have started getting '*' in the password mask too.

After installing Gutsy, I noticed the asterisks have becomes the new default!

Why?

The asterisks are not as visually pleasing as the circles. Can we revert the default back to the circles?

those should not be the default and you are commenting on the wrong bug, your issue is different of the one described there
