alsamixer -c0

does the playback switch toggle on an off rapidly in alsamixer ?

does it help if you disabled automute ?

I start alsamixer -c0. Then I disabled automute. After reboot I observed
that s/PDIF is muted. I change this to '00'. Then I reboot again,
without sucess.

A proposal isthat I can give you the informatin of the command
'ubuntu-bug -s audio' in the release 11.04, where the sound is ok in
order you can compare the difference of the sound problem between 11.04
and 12.10.
