Bug Description

Install was initiated through Ubuntu Software Update utility.

Target system is Ubuntu 12.10 on a Toshiba Satellite P500-1JF where Ubuntu was unstalled via Wubi on Windows 7 host. This machine also runs Apple OSX Lion 10.7.4. Windows, Ubuntu and Lion on deparate HDs/petitions.

I also had the same installation problem with my other machine which is a desktop Pentium 4 2.4GHz machine where Ubuntu 12.10 is the only dedicated OS.

Should you require any further info about this problem or my systems please feel welcome to email me via my primary account email.

Best regards,

Allan

Firstly, my apologies for the delay commenting back about this bug. I have had a busier than normal few months studying for pilot school and since I have three operating systems on this machine, if one of them isnt working when I'm busy I tend to just make do with one of the others until I have time to come back to the problem, hence the delay!

I tried the suggestion put forward by Joseph (thanks for that) back in December but it didnt clear the problem. I keep getting the same issue each time 12.10 tries to self update. I tried resubmitting the problem today and the system declined to submit the report because I had already reported it... I think that is a pretty neat feature, so complements to the developers for implementing a common sense reporting path that works!

Anyway back to the problem. I still have the same issue with this core package failing to update. Since I originally reported the issue, some things have updated and some things haven't so what I will do right now is attempt Joseph's cleanup command lines again and I will report back in the next 15 minutes or so whether the problem resolved.

back shortly...

Actually there appears to be an issue in the reporter's /etc/default/grub.conf file:

Could you please add the file /etc/default/grub as an attachment? Thanks in advance.

This has some details about what the format should be - http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/gfxmode.html. I believe you want single quotes around the resolution and not >> << so:

GRUB_GFXMODE='1280x800-24'

Thanks Brian you are a genius! That seems to have fixed it.

I have two (almost) duplicate installations of 12.10 here and they were both suffering the same problem. I found the same syntax error in both machines' GRUB files and after correcting them they both updated without error and are now stable.

I have a question though - I notice that line 11 also uses this syntax - is that also an error and should I fix it too?

10 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset
11 video=uvesafb:mode_option=>>1280x800-24<<,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap"
12 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

I think the 'culprit' was a third party customisation utility called super-boot-manager.

Thanks again for your input

Allan
