Maybe the following information help: I am now working with Kernel 2.6.17, the problem is not occuring there. Additionally, I flashed my BIOS to a new version, but this only made the problem slightly worse. It occurs more often now in my opinion, but that's difficult to tell as it is not occuring regularly.

Another perhaps interesting fact: I discovered that as long as I have a CD in my CD-ROM drive the freezes don't occur...

Hello, I'm new on launchpad. I write from Germany and use Kubuntu 7.10. I the same problems as Phillip.
Absolutly no prolems with using PCLinuxOS Kernel 2.6.18 or Kubuntu Edgy 6.10 on my system, but using Kubuntu Feisty Kernel 2.6.20 or Kubuntu Gutsy Kernel 2.6.22 show the problems above.
Trying to boot the Live-CD for installing the OS ends in the busybox after showing this Sata-Problems. When I Plug off my Sata.Drives, there is no positive effect on this problem-->Sata Controller!! I use an Asrock Board ConRoe1333-D667. Kernel 18 works up from 20 the problems occured?!

If you don't have a cdrom in the drive, removing the cdrom and sr_mod modules avoids the freezes too.

Can anybody still experiencing this problem test the following possible solution?
http://linux-ata.org/faq.html#combined
The slow down as a result of the PATA/SATA combination may be causing at least some of the above mentioned problems.
This will probably only affect those with Intel chipsets.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : Kernel team bugs

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Since few days, I am trying run linux on my Aspire 9410, first with Fedora, then I tried Ubuntu latest version with the updates - 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-20-generic. I got the same error with both systems. The funny thing is that the trick of inserting a CD fix the problem!

Interestingly... i'm running ubuntu 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31.15) on a 32bit
machine and this is, almost, no longer an issue... since, sometimes, it
still happens (about once a month or so...)
