Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdebluetooth

When opening the "bluetooth" module for the first time after starting the kde systemsettings program, it will popup a rather non-descriptive error "DCOP error when calling services()". I do not have any bluetooth hardware on my pc; the bluetooth module is installed by default on kubuntu because it is part of kdebluetooth which in turn is a dependency of the kubuntu-desktop package.

The error should either not happen/popup at all, or it should be more descriptive (taking into account that it is installed by default on every kubuntu system and as such there's a very real chance that no bluetooth hardware or services are present at all).

$ systemsettings

This happens on a fresh install of feisty

Running kbluetoothd on sony vaio pcg-frv35.

According to dmesg, bluetooth is present.

Message is generally mysterious with no clear path to resolution.

I was just about to file this bug... I agree. When I have my bluetooth module turned on, Bob's my uncle. When it's turned off, however, I get this super-cryptic, totally non-newbie-friendly message.

I suggest something like "No Bluetooth services found; either there is no Bluetooth hardware, or bluez is not running."

This shouldn't be a problem any more in Kubuntu 9.04, though I can't say that bluetooth in general works all too well...

Bluetooth support has been replaced by "BlueDevil" and the old code is no
longer maintained. If you still have an issue with Bluetooth support in a
recent KDE version, such as KDE 4.9.5 or 4.10, please report a new bug.

Also, if this is a feature request that has not yet been implemented in
BlueDevil, please add a comment.
