Adept crashes if Java license agreement is not accepted

Bug Description

When i try to install ubuntu-restricted-extras packackage with adept it fails just after displaying java license agreement to me. It seems that adept wont install java6-bin and because of that fails.
With apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras it works just fine (from scratch).

Laur,

Thanks for reporting this bug. It would be great if you could try a few things to help find the problem. The first is to check if you have the package libqt-perl installed since the handling of the java license display needs that. Obviously if you don't have it install it and try again. The next thing is when you try to install java click the 'show details' button in adept and check what dpkg is saying. If you see any errors relating to debconf front ends could you report those. Finally, attempting to install java and then attaching /var/log/dpkg.log wouldn't hurt.

thanks for helping to improve Kubuntu.
Richard

Tryied it again, sorry for that long response time.
It displays the license, and if i scroll down, (what i didn't before) and check the box, it installs just fine.
It is my mistake that I didn't scroll down, BUT it still shouldn't crash when user won't check the box.

Laur,

I agree that this should be handled more gracefully so I spent sometime trying to reproduce the problem. What follows is my description of what occurred. Can you confirm if this matches what you observed. It gets a bit long but I'm trying to be as complete as possible to try and get this fixed.

I attempted to install ubuntu-restricted-extras using adept manager. When adept gets to installing sun-java6-bin the license agreement appears in a dialogue box titled 'debconf on mycomputer'. If I click next without checking the 'I accept' box then the embedded dpkg output in attempt reports an error:
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/sun-java6-bin_6-00-2ubuntu-2_i386.deb (--unpack)
subprocess pre-installation script returned an error exit status 1.

I also get a dialogue box with the message:

Declined Operating System Distributor License for Java v1.1 (DLJ)
If you do not agree to the DLJ license terms you cannot install this software
The installation of this package will be cancelled.

I click next and I get another message box titled 'Could not commit changes - Adept Manager' with the text:

There was an error committing changes. Possible reasons include problems downloading some of the packages or that the commit would break other packages.

At the same time I see a second copy of the java license agreement appear because Adept appears to be trying to install sun-java6-jre. If I click OK in the 'Could not commit changes' box then Adept crashes and generates a backtrace. See attached. I will also attach dpkg.log for the session.

I had to run sudo dpkg --configure -a to get adept back in a usable condition. Then I repeated my attempt to install ubuntu-restricted-extras. If I accept the java license then the installation completes without errors.

Laur, is this consistent with what you observed? If your crash generated a backtrace could you attach it if you still have it.

I was going to attach dpkg.log but it seems to have been overwritten by my second attempt at the install so it doesn't contain anything useful, sorry

Thank you Richard!
Yes it is how you described it.
My english sometimes prevents me from writing very complete reports, sorry.
My dpkg.log is also overwritten, should i do a fresh install to get it or it can do without ?

Laur,

thanks for the quick response. Don't worry about the dpkg.log it's not essential. Hopefully the traceback should be enough. I can set the status to confirmed now so it should get fixed in due course.

thanks for your input.
Richard

Bumping the importance. This bug is a nuisance, I thought it was fixed but seemingly not as there are still duplicates appearing

I have the same problem! installing kubuntu-restricted-extras at java license agreement, adept displays the error and i have to use "sudo apt-get install -f" to resolve! that's an anoying bug since kubuntu 6.10

I can also confirm this.

It should not break Adapt, but it does if user does not scroll to bottom of Java licence agreement and tick the box.

Present in Kubuntu 7.10 with latest updates (up to 13th Jan 2008)

Adept 3.0 alpha5 doesn't have this crash. Since it hasn't been officially packaged I'll mark this as fixed committed.

In Kubuntu 8.10, Adept did not crash in these circumstances. However it left the system in a bad shape.
I had to dpkg --configure -a in order to put it back in order, and get firefox working, for example.

Adept should be able to recover properly in such a case.
