Hi,

as you can see in all large Linuxboards all Users with a 8800 GTS or GTX have the same Problems.

Ubuntu only works at LiveCD but not after HD Install with the 8800 Cards.

Greetings

Hi,

as you can see in all large Linuxboards all Users with a 8800 GTS or GTX have the same Problems.

Ubuntu only works at LiveCD but not after HD Install with the 8800 Cards.
The Installer is not saving the Resolution choosed at LiveCD Bootmenu.

After HD Install the only thing that works is to boot in safed Graphics mode and make a 'dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg' .

Then it works in Safemode - but after Reboot everything is gone away.

I have installed the nVidia Drivers with Envy after trying this - after Reboot same Thing as before.

A Start at normal HD Mode is not possible - after GRUB there is immediately only a Blackscreen. Seems to be a Error in VESA or Bootroutine.

Greetings

André

Did you try installing the nvidia-glx-new package?

Just to explain - the Effect is not only affecting the Start of X. It beginns with the Bootroutine. It starts loading and all i can see is nothing because Ubuntu is not choosing the correct VESA Resolution for my System.

OK, then can you post the output of your /boot/grub/menu.lst so that
we can compare the differences between that and the LiveCD? You're
probably right that it is an issue, but before I mark it CONFIRMED I
want to have some configs/logs. Also, can you think of any other
reason for why this is happening?

Right, I understand that. That's why I wanted to see what was being
passed to your kernel for the video settings in both your setup and
the LiveCD. Does overriding the setting manually help? For instance,
vga=0x311 ???

1. Yes - vga=0x311 and others are working *same like LiveCD*

2. But then it gets to a X Error.

3. Changing to nvidia in Menu at reconfiguring X brings Blackscreen again.

4. Reboot - Safemode - dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg and switch to nv .... :-/

All that everytime still works is nv with 1280*1024 after dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg in Graphical Safemode.

It works now - i have added vga=0x318 to the menu.lst.

But in Fact / it seems to be a Error at the Installer.

Not only my Resolution was not saved - my Charset is english and i have choosen German at Installation. *argh*

But Networksettings are ok.

So, basically your card is not recognized during boot (because xresprobe returns bogus values, maybe dupe of bug 31830), and the vesa-breakage is bug 89853. The nv-driver seems to work just fine after you've change the config?

I'd still like to see /var/log/casper.log to be sure.

Yes it does as you say.

BUT - back to my Topicdescription - X breaks with nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new and envy. Still no way to activate 3D!!!
Logs seen above.

I reboot now with LiveCD and attach you the casper.log

From the various accounts of the issue, some different than others, I am uncertain still exactly what the issue is. In my case I found that the 8800gts was not working due to a missing x-server module as reported in the Xorg.0.log. The required file is included with Nvidia's driver-package, but there's no trace of /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so* in any ubuntu-packages. I.e. it seems to be a build/packaging issue, and that the file simply should be included in the nvidia-glx-new package. The X-server works, with eye-candy and all, using the driver in nvidia-glx-new if the missing file manually extracted from nvidia's package and copied into /usr/lib/xorg/modules.

If this really is about a missing wfb driver then this is a duplicate of Bug #98641 . Be warned though nvidia-glx-new does not support every new NVIDIA card out there in Feisty (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia )

The 8800 GTS is claimed to be supported, but is broken due to libwfb.
The dupe you reported seems to have an ongoing issue with the fix being
rejected or may be merged with another bug fix. I will mark it a dupe
nevertheless. Let me know if you have any other info. As I said, the
8800 GTS is reported to not be working, yet it is claimed to be
supported by the nvidia-glx-new package. This has been confirmed by
numerous reports...
