muting sound in mplayer causes rhythmbox to mute

When I mute or lower the sound volume in mplayer it influences the sound volume in rhythmbox. In the opposite way everything seems to work fine I can rise or lower sound volume in rhythmbox without changing values in mplayer.

It happens only when a movie is being played in mplayer.

I bet the change of volume level in mplayer is also changing the system wide volume. It happens because you are not using software mixing. To enable it in GUI version of mplayer (gmplayer) go to Preferences/Audio and tick "Enable Software Mixer" option.

If you use the no gui version you need to modify ./mplayer/config file. Add the line:
softvol = "yes"

Your solution with software mixing solves the problem. I think that this should enabled by default. After all it is not obvious for everyone.
