Bug Description

After installing fglrx-installer, upon reboot Unity did not load.

Tried https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=quantal but this did not work.

HP offers an i386 only linux version of fglrx tailored to the HP Probook 4530s http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=5060882&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=5060880&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2020#11360 .

These drivers are rpm files. In an attempt to convert them, I have
discovered that HP offers no drivers for 64-bit, only i386.

Michael did you try both drivers from my PPA?
You have to install the intel driver and one of the fglrx ones.

Moreover, when you say unity does not load, what is the exact symptom?
a) You can see the background and the windows but you have no menus and no window borders, or
b) You get a message about safe mode in a window over a black background?

I don't recall if I tried installing fglrx-updates, but I did install the intel driver and the fglrx.

The symptom after installing your drivers is low graphics mode. After installing the official drivers I get the background with no window borders and no menus.

In both of these attempts I installed from a fresh install of 12.10.

I mistakenly made this previous bug report when using your workaround if this helps: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1075688

Do you get Unity and all the window borders?

Sorry, but I am kind of confused.
Let me see if I get it right:

With the official drivers ( I guess the ones shipped by default with Ubuntu), you get:
a) Unity does not load, but you have the windows and you can open a new terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T
b) If you write in the terminal:
DISPLAY=:0 compiz --replace &
then Unity loads

I don't get where the low-graphics mode is involved

Michael Knopp (unclean009) wrote :

No. Everything works fine with the drivers shipped with Ubuntu by default. The only issue is my laptop runs very hot and the battery only lasts about 1 hour. In 12.04 this was solved by installing the additional drivers supplied within Ubuntu.

I did this:

1. Installed fglrx through "Additional Drivers"
2. Rebooted. Unity is missing.
3. Entered terminal through Ctrl+Alt+T and typed "DISPLAY=:0 compiz --replace"
4. Removed my battery and rebooted as I saw no other option to reboot since I no longer could enter into term
5. Am now in low-graphics mode

Try to install xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.20.9-0ubuntu2+andrik2_amd64.deb and fglrx_9.000-0ubuntu3+andrik1_amd64.deb from my PPA in order to exclude some issues:
https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=quantal

After that reboot and describe what happens.

And for your future reference, if you don't want the terminal to be stuck, then you have two options:

a) Add & in the end of the command:
DISPLAY=:0 compiz --replace &

b) Press Ctrl+Z to suspend the joband then write:
fg &
in order to send in the background.

I re-installed 12.04 then, upgraded to fresh 12.10 and followed the steps one more time. Unfortunately, it still does not work. All I got is no unity and errors in fglrxinfo.
So I rolled it back and installed 12.04 and fglrx, finally laptop stopped thinking it is a helicopter =)

Michael Knopp, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p fglrx-installer REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
