Bug Description

System: Lenovo W520
2 SSDs: INTEL SSDSC2CW240A3 and OCZ-VERTEX2

Installed 12.10 (64bit) but cannot boot it due to IO Errors:

--- snip -----
status: { DRDY }
failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED
cmd 61/08:e8:6e:24:b7/00:00:08:00:00/40 tag 29 ncq 4096
res 40/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/00 Emask 0x4 (timeout)

....

revalidation failed (errno=-5)

...

end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 1824233094

--- snap ---

(Sorry, I have to type this from a video I've taken so no guarantee for every single byte)

This happens for both disks if I try to install 12.10 on it.

11.04 works (in this regard) flawlessly on both disks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1075972/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

All information is fetched on 11.04. The problem is with 12.10 but because it doesn't boot I can't run any scripts.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Testing the upstream kernel is a little problematic:

1. The freshly installed 12.10 doesn't boot.
2. My current system is 32bit. The new one is 64bit.
3. Ubuntu LIVE doesn't boot

Best regards

Tried 12.10 32bit. This does work. Is it possible to install a 64bit kernel on an 32bit userland?

Joseph: I would. But only the 32bit version boots while the 64bit doesn't. Is it possible to install 64bit Kernel in 32bit userland? If yes then I'll try it.

Florian Bantner, as per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update is available for your BIOS (1.41). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.
