Bug Description
Binary package hint: base-installer
See other bug report for libpaper1: https:/
I am reporting this for base-installer, because while libpaper1 is the service that interacts with /etc/papersize, the file itself is not listed in the package's contents so therefore I am assuming that Edgy's base-installer installs /etc/papersize.
The bug being that this file contains the text "a4" which overrides practically every setting in KDE printing, CUPS etc making it impossible to print to US Letter with anything but a test page.
It took me over 4 hours after my Edgy clean install to find this file (Kubuntu 6.10 LiveCD install) and correct the problem. This is definitely a bug for US/Canada (Mexico?) locales.
However, I also feel that the libpaper1 library is harmful for printing as it is not configurable using any tool in the standard printer toolset: KDE PrintManager, CUPS localhost:631, or foomatic-gui. Therefore I question the need for libpaper1 to even be in the default install.

Did you use the alternate install CD or the desktop CD? I suspect that you used the latter.
