Bug Description

Using up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, either recommended or post-updates drivers, the external HDMI display (HD TV) is detected and shown as connected in xrandr and the Nvidia Settings utility, yet there is no signal and the screen remains black.

I opened another bug for the same issue with nouveau drivers, bug #1073185.

I tested this setup after installing the updates from the xorg-edgers PPA, same results:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

I also tested with Ubuntu 11.10 (looking at a possible regression and when it may have happened), same results.

The xorg log has several entries showing a problem with EDID:
 25.371] (WW) NVIDIA(0): The EDID for SONY TV (DFP-0) contradicts itself: mode
[ 25.371] (WW) NVIDIA(0): "1920x1080" is specified in the EDID; however, the EDID's
[ 25.371] (WW) NVIDIA(0): valid VertRefresh range (58.000-62.000 Hz) would exclude
