Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

This bug has been nagging me for a while now. It started on Edgy, and I became fed up with it, thinking maybe it was my hardware, so I switched back to Dapper. Now I switched to Feisty, and its back!

On to the symptoms:
Whenever I load anything that uses 3D graphics or OpenGL, my computer freezes (hard), including
   -Beryl
   -Compiz
   -glxgears

Sometimes I can run for hours with Beryl, but other times, it struggles to run for a minute before hard-locking, requiring me to reset my computer manually.

This bug has also been observed on nvidia-glx and nvidia-glx-new on both of the newer feisty kernels.

EDIT: I don't know if this is connected to this bug, but I though it might help troubleshooting. Sometimes I experience system instability of the whole OS. For example, if I am ripping a DVD or other processor intensive application. MEncoder frequently exits with "Error 139".

Thank you for yoru bug report.

Are there any NVRM: Xid messages in dmesg the moment after this happens? Are there any NVRM: Xid messages in /var/log/messages at all?

I have not seen any. I have heard of the XID bug before, and checked
then. I can check again if you would like, but I am currently using the
nv drivers and have uninstalled the nvidia proprietary drivers

I have the same problems, started since the new kernel, 2.6.20.5-16.
Here's the NVRM: Xid messages from my kernel.log, a couple day's worth of errors.

Disregard earlier post. I've confirmed that my video card is dying due to the nvidia 7900 series video memory corruption problem.
(I've found that this can occur under Microsoft Windows as well)

Could you post the output of
lspci -vnn | grep -i nv -A 5
?

I too have the same problem with 3D / Xgl / Glx locking up and crashing X...

I posted here as well:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-kernel-common/+bug/109721

here are the details...
I tried the 2.6.20-16 & 2.6.20-15 kernels with all proprietary & non-proprietary Nvidia drivers...Xgl goes to 100% CPU and dies.
So although we still have dual display, no more compiz nor beryl in the twinview config.

To Reproduce:
Stop all X instances:
/etc/init.d/xorg-common stop && /etc/init.d/gdm stop
or
/etc/init.d/xorg-common stop && /etc/init.d/kdm stop #for kubuntu
then in the console run:
export DISPLAY=:1
sudo /usr/bin/Xgl :1 -fullscreen +xinerama &
glxgears &

...after a few seconds of spinning the Gears will slow down, XGL will go to 100% CPU and a few more mouse clicks will kill the X session completly.

heres some of my system info:
lspci |grep -i nvid

I would like to also confirm that this is happening on my system too. I did a clean install of 7.04, updated everything, and utilizing the Nvidia drivers it will lock up to the point where I need to reboot. Hopefully this is everything you need let me know and I'll fill in any other items you may be interested in.

Another note, normally running glxgears will cause an almost immediate lockup. I disabled Desktop Effects, and have been running glxgears for about 5 minutes now without a problem. So this might not be a nvidia bug but one in compiz. Just a thought that might help.

You might be better off switching to the nvidia-glx-new driver. Be careful if you do decide to switch as switching back to nvidia-glx can lead to the hidden file bug ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia ).
