Bug Description

By default this system uses the Nouveau drivers, with which Unity and the desktop work correctly, but the system becomes unresponsive when trying to resume from suspend (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/754711). The usual workaround is to use the proprietary drivers.

I installed the proprietary drivers, ran into bug1069888, and then tried to establish suspend/resume behavior.

System enters suspend correctly, then resumes but then the screen is unusable (all black) and the backlight is turned off. I was able to SSH into the system so it seems to be active, but is useless because of the screen condition.

I tried "blind typing" to see if only the screen has this problem or the keyboard is also unresponsive. It turns out, it is, nothing I type gets registered by the system.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Let me set this back to incomplete and will run the requested tests in a few days, when I have access to the system.

OK, finally got around to testing this.

I tested both the kernel that ships with Raring daily images and a mainline kernel, these are the versions:

Linux kernel x86 boot executable bzImage, version 3.8.0-2-generic (buildd@komainu) #6-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 25 22:03, RO-rootFS, swap_dev 0x5, Normal VGA

Linux kernel x86 boot executable bzImage, version 3.8.0-030800rc5-generic (root@gomeisa) #201301251535 SMP Fri Ja, RO-rootFS, swap_dev 0x5, Normal VGA

With both, I installed nvidia-current, suspended, then resumed the system.

Unlike the original report, both kernels with nvidia-current are able to restore the backlight and resume without issues.

Daniel Manrique, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>
