Bug Description

amd64 12,10 all updated to 20121021 boots to solid purple screen. Some flickering from hard drive when Ctrl-Alt-F1 pressed.

Removing "splash" from linux line boots as expected.

 Linux version 3.5.0-17-generic (buildd@allspice) (gcc version 4.7.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) ) #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:31:23 UTC 2012

Acer Aspire 5253 wide screen dual processor 2 GB 1.6 gHz

Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler [Radeon HD 6310]

12,04 works fine. Booted to normal 1366x768 screen on QQ A1, A2, A3, B1, B2 without this problem. First showed up on RC.

Workaround. I made up a /etc/grub.d/06_custom copying the /boot/grub/grub.cfg entry for "Ubuntu" omitting the word "splash" boots O.K.

Fine for me, not so good if anyone else has an Acer Aspire 5253 installing amd64 12.10

Note, using "Advanced Options" boots to a horrible offset slow 1024x768 screen and Systems settings > displays will not give me the choice of 1366x768

Please run 'apport-collect -p plymouth 1069583'.

If you hit Esc when the system boots to a purple screen, does anything happen? Does anything happen if you try to change VTs with Alt+F1?

It would also be helpful if you could boot with 'plymouth.debug=file:/var/log/plymouth-debug.log', with splash set, and attach the resulting file. (You may of course have to reboot twice, if the first boot doesn't let you boot to the GUI; in that case, please take care that the second boot does NOT include this boot argument since it would overwrite the debug log that we're looking for.

Thanks for looking at this bug.

I put the Plymouth log commands on the linux line, along with splash. Log attached.

Note in no case does splash appear. I'm entering this from Quetzal Beta which does show a splash screen and boots normally. Boots O.K. then copy the log from the partition with the 12.10 release level.

12.10 release never shows a splash screen whether splash is in the linux line or not. Never any cursor.

Esc key does a little hard drive activity. Still solid purple screen.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 same purple screen, no cursor. does some hard drive activity. I can blindly log in, password, sudo reboot, password and it does.
I can also Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then hold down Ctrl-Alt-Del which does reboot.

Anything to try? I can re-do the log if it would be useful.

Booted twice O.K. I'd consider problem resolved with python 3.2 update.

authenticate problem with wireless WPA but that's a different bug

Except that python is not involved at all with the splash screen handling. Well, if it's fixed for you, no sense in keeping this report open, anyway.
