After Upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 fails ATI graphic card detection

Bug Description

After Upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 (AMD64/ATI SAPPHIRE graphic card) issuing the following command in teminal: sudo aticonfig

causes the message aticonfig: No supported adatpers detected to be shown.

In this context, Unity won't show the launcher and the menu bar while Gnome seems to work properly even if in VGA mode.
