Bug Description

Hello,
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 (64bit) and I've run into a problem with the wireless connection. It connects as normal but after a brief time (1 minute at max) it looks like I'm not connected any more. Pages in Chromium stop loading, Dropbox stops syncing, Empathy tells me I need to reconnect, and apparently I need to re-authorize Google online accounts (but the appropriate page fails to load if I try).

The system doesn't report any errors, however. It tells me that I'm still connected with normal signal.

If I try reconnect to the same network, the symptoms disappear (I can load pages, reconnect to Empathy and so on) but after a very brief time they reappear as before.

Everything works fine on other devices connected to the same network, and I could use the internet normally when I had Ubuntu 12.04 installed on the same computer showing the error.

This bug is very similar to the one reported by Carnalbeast in comment #16 on the following bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/997774
The only difference is time (I can use the internet for about a minute at most). I could not find a bug report about it, however.

I discovered similarities with Bug #997774 as well:
- disabling ipv6 seems to work
- kernel v3.2.17 (suggested there) works perfectly, even with ipv6 enabled; I've not yet tried other kernels

However, bug #997774 has been solved by updating the default kernel, while my problem has not. Also, as I understand it, in bug #997774 the system actually disconnected, while in my case everything is apparently working until I try to use an online application.

Update: after updating to the latest kernel from the proposed updates (v3.5.0-18) everything seems to be working. I should have waited a few hours!
If the problem appears again I will post a new comment

As reported, I could connect yesterday evening with the new kernel (v3.5.0-18); it was a bit slow (I don't know if this is related to this bug) and a few pages failed to reload, but I was able to solve it simply by refreshing them.

Today, however, the problem reappeared. I confirm that kernel v3.2.17 works, and that other devices can connect without issues, so I think it's related to newer kernels. I'll be glad to make more tests if needed.

I've been using kernel v3.5.0-18 recently. I *can* connect to the internet, however the connection stops working very often (with the symptoms described above, related to a variety of applications). Sometimes it starts working again. If I keep refreshing a page, sometimes it loads.

Usually the connection works just after I connect to the local network. It works for a very unpredictable time length, however, and sometimes doesn't work at all even just after connecting.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I'm testing the kernel you suggested right now and it seems to be working! The problem didn't present itself, and pages load a lot faster than in the default kernel (where I always got a small delay before Chromium started loading).

I wasn't able to install linux-headers-3.7.0-030700rc2-generic_3.7.0-030700rc2.201210201535_amd64.deb because of a missing dependancy (linux-headers-3.7.0-030700rc2-generic_3.7.0-030700rc2). I had problems with the default session, so I'm testing this in GNOME classic (I don't think it makes any difference though).

Some other notes:

- I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit image and created a Live USB. I've tried it only briefly, and the problem did not appear. I tested it only for a few minutes, so I'm not sure if it was really working or if I was lucky.

- disabling ipv6 doesn't work. I thought it worked, but I tested this more extensively today and the problem persists, with random online and offline periods.

Thanks for the help!
