Bug Description

Almost all messages from Gmail boxes are duplicated in the Indicator-messages.

Fox ex. I receive a message on my Gmail box from Launchpad. It is duplicated in my Inbox folder and "Important" folder (see screenshot).

It is also duplicated in the message-indicator and when I read this message in my Inbox folder it is not marking as read and still showing in Indicator-messages, Thunderbird windows and Thunderbird icon on the Unity panel.

If I delete this message - in will be deleted from the "important" folder also.

The problem is on any Gmail boxes and on any PC and laptop where I have installed Ubuntu.

Tbh, I'm not really sure how to fix this, or if it can be properly fixed. The "Important" folder just appears as any other normal IMAP folder

Maybe it is possible just to ignore it in notifications? Because, every message that gets to the folder "Important" also gets to Inbox folder.

I'm only just an user :)

And it is hard for me to suggest something specific.

Perhaps like an exception specifically for Gmail boxes?

I think it is quite annoying issue. And it would be great if you, or somebody find a way to fix this.

I don't think this is fixable client side save for some code actually checking to see if the messages are the same. The question then is which one to show? The GMail "folders" are simply tags which the GMail server serves as a folder. Some people might have stuff not shown in their inbox once it's tagged, others have the messages in both places.

Yes, you right. But we are talking about default settings of Gmail box and specifically about "Important" tag. And in this case almost every inbox mail is tagged as "important". And here we have this duplicate problem...

You are trying to tell me that it is not possible on client side to make 1 notification for specifically this default "Important" tag (folder)? Or maybe make an option in the Thunderbird settings to combine 1 notification from inbox folder and 1 from "Important" folder. Or as another option disable all notifications from Gmail folders except Inbox folder for people that don't use tags in settings?

I'm not sure why every inbox mail for you is being tagged "important", because that's not the case here and you're the first person to report this as an issue (although, I was already aware of it, having hit it on the occasional time Google flags a message as important).

String matching on the label name won't work, as it's translated in to every language supported by Google, which means it's completely dependant on the UI language you select in Gmail. For this reason, string matching is always unreliable and breaks frequently as translations are updated.

Checking if messages are the same is not really an option. As the 2 messages have different URI's, the only way to check if messages are the same would be to compare their contents, which a) is incredibly slow, and b) requires us to stream the entire contents of every message from the network (rather than just the message headers) just to show a notification.

Unfortunately, there isn't really any good solution here. If it bothers you that much, you can turn on "Inbox only" mode in the preferences....

Oh, it might be possible to use Message-ID, but that's an optional header according to RFC2822

Maybe no one report it? I have 3 Gmail boxes with default settings, and all of them have this issue. Also I am supporting a small office with 5 laptops. And the all have about 1 or 2 Gmail boxes and using Thunderbird on Ubuntu. And they all have this issue.

So recording to your last comment it is possible to fix?

From experience, we generally get bug reports pretty quickly when users are having problems.

Yes, it may be possible to fix, but it's a non-trivial amount of work and there's still an issue of choosing which folder to display a notification for when a message is duplicated. And then we are back to square one again....

(so it's not going to be fixed any time soon)

The most problem is that when I read the message in my Inbox the duplicate in "Important" folder is still listed as not read for some time in Thunderbird, an icon on Unity panel and in indicator-messages. Maybe it is possible to just update message status for duplicate in "Important" folder when I read the original one?

The problem with duplicate notification is much lesser then this.
