Bug Description

Reported by pescadou999 on the ubuntu-fr forum ( http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=10790101#p10790101 ).

Acer Aspire 5736z
There was no problem with default settings in 10.04.

Since 12.04 (tested with default kernel, and with 3.6.0 mainline):
- default settings: very low brightness (it is very difficult to see the login screen appearing). The Fn+brightness keys have no effect.
- with 'nomodeset' on 12.04: brightness is ok, but the screen resolution is bad (image is distorted)
- with 'acpi_osi=Linux': brightness is low at first, but Fn+brightness allow to increase it successfully. Image is not distorted.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Missing required logs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1051824

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The bug reporter is using a fresh 12.04 on which he tried to install some video drivers via https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
So now he's using kernel 3.5.0-13-generic from this PPA.
That's why he can't use Apport.

(I will ask him to test mainline kernel)

I try this and it is ok
grub need :
"quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux" et non "quiet splash acpi_osi = Linux" , pas d'espace de part et d'autre de =
et cela marche au reboot (en appuyant bien sur sur Fn+luminosité dès que l'écran noir apparait)
C'est mieux que rien et que le "nomodeset" mais c'est surement pas grand chose à corriger..j'implore les développeurs....
Sorry for french comment

Same problem here..

Precise with default precise kernel (3.2.0.x): Start at default level, Fn+brightness not working
Precise with linux-generic-lts-quantal (3.5.0.x): Start at black screen on lightdm (pre-lightdm screens appears), Fn+brightness do work

The keys Fn+brightness work even on bios settings, I don't understand the reason of this bug... If I can do anything to help fixing this, please let me know.

YannUbuntu, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Hello M.Penalver
Sorry for my english
I try the iso in http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ for i386.iso (13.10) but the result is not positive
When i start i must push on light+ to see something on the screen and if i choose in the menu i have a screen with
Ubuntu in the middle and 5 points under the word Ubuntu and finaly the screen change for lines and noises , i must close when bouton off,i retry with options nomodeset, acpiosi etc.. (all on my Acer Aspire 5736z) but i have the same when i boot on my Packard Bell Easy Note.
Can you solve the problem ?
apport-collect -p linux 1051824 do not run because :
You need to run 'sudo apt-get install python-apport' for apport-collect to work.
pierre@pierre-Aspire-5736Z:~$ sudo apt-get install python-apport

Cependant les paquets suivants le remplacent :
  apport

I stay waiting for you to test something else

i find a solution on a other forum : (but i do not know why)
In the file rc.local :
éditer le /etc/rc.local et y ajouter : sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 juste avant exit 0 dans /etc/rc.local
and then all is ok i have a screen of 1366x768 , my pc is Acer Aspire 5736z and this solution is good for Linux Mint, Xubuntu 13.04
and i test the others.
Thanks

Part of above comment is in French:

éditer le /etc/rc.local et y ajouter : sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00 juste avant exit 0 dans /etc/rc.local

means

in the /etc/rc.local file, add : "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00" just before "exit 0"
