With STDIN no way to have no domain and hostname

Basically you need a way to specify that there isn't a domain, while the text implies this is possible, it is actually not because return values are not checked. Also, if you're providing the data as a stream of text it is difficult to send the end of transmission. So this adds a "." as a key for a null domain as well.
