Bug Description

Hi,

since a few days I am using a FreeNAS server as home storage, and I noticed that often when I am trasferring large ISO via NFS, the network stop transmitting and receiving packets: I cannot ping any other host on the local network, and the system doesn't recognize even the unplugging of the ethernet cable (I tried to change switch port). In the dmesg there isn't any error, but the unique way I've found to recover from this situation is to reload the kernel module.

Dmesg excerpt:
[ 1170.161410] nfs: server debos.local not responding, timed out

and NFS recover succesfully.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Gionn, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

I am currently using the 3.5 kernel offered in the linux-image-backports-lts package and have been working for months.

Thanks.

I am also seeing disconnects with the atl1c under load.
There is a related kernel bug:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54021

Problem should be fixed on lasted git:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/atl1c?id=7b70176421993866e616f1cbc4d0dd4054f1bf78

Please consider applying this patch to your kernel, since lan is not usable with this bug.

I am using kubuntu raring 64bit.
