Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.04 32bit / 64bit (this affect both the 32bit and the 64bit distros).
Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 512mb gddr5 pci-e with Official Catalyst 12.6.
When I try to log Ubuntu (Unity 3D), the graphical interface freezes, except for the cursor. I can do ctrl+alt+f1. Updates are not useful nor standard drivers. Ubuntu 2D is not affected.

Yes, I've also tried the proprietary drivers without results, as well as the repos. Same for Gnome and Gnome Classic, except the without effect, like Unity 2D. When I log with Ubuntu 2D (Unity 2D) or Gnome Classic (without effect) games runs well and the test /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p give positive results.

Unity 2D works perfectly, unity-3D freezes randomly. I've tried without success:
- upgrade kernel to 3.4.9 version;
- install lowlatency kernel;
- disable the kernel thermal module with "thermal.off=1".

May be "thermal.off=1" gave me a little more time before freezing, but I cannot be sure about it.

When unity-3d stops working I haven't any message from system, neither in var/log/syslog nor in dmesg.
Mouse pointer keeps moving but buttons have not effects. Every tasks is freezed, and I can only press CTRL ALT F1 and use "kill -9 -1" to return on login screen.

That's a very strange way for it to get solved. When you earlier said that 12.10 was also affected were you attempting an upgrade or a fresh install?

It's possible that you've just had some unlucky upgrades or bad installs if stock configurations are working correctly.

To the original poster, which chipset does the computer/mainboard uses?
Can you provide the lspci output?

Upload lspci.txt to this bug report.
I think I have seen a somewhat similar bug here.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1063656

Similar symptoms: Works fine in recovery mode (I assume Unity-2D is running), and not the regular mode.
After I log in, the wallpaper is drawn, but nothing happens.
Keyboard and mouse cursor are still alive (i.e., Caps Lock LED responds, mouse cursor still moves around the screen).
Happens with Radeon X600 (RV380) and Radeon HD 4350 (RV710).
Although I have not uploaded the report, same with Radeon HD 5450 as well.
AGP version like Radeon 9800 Pro (R350) is not affected.

fpgahardwareengineer

Tommaso Bosco, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Some of its kinda personal, so I really don't want to divulge that bit, but essentially She didn't like what I had to say because she was upset and sort of lashed out at me. I know she wouldn't want to hurt me on purpose, but I also know the things she said about me are true. *she sighs and grabs a drink.*

You hit on pretty much everything I want to improve as time goes on. As for blighted, that was the best way I could think of to represent someone who grew up rough and has been fighting almost continuously since he was a teen without taking the time or expending the effort to actually take care of his body beyond the minimum required. Golden is aware that he is damaged and wants to do something about it but doesn't have the resources right now.

I think Cool Resolve has been resolved. Capped at 2 ranks according to FallenSeraph75.

I don't know if anyone will look back at this thread but I sincerely apologize if I upset anyone. I basically ended up just getting really drunk and passing out. I had people in my life that know about my problems but they felt a million miles away. I emailed my therapist (who is a great guy) and I'm figuring out what my next step for help is. I normally don't get many replies when I post on reddit for help and all these comments and PMs are amazing, I'm crying to myself. I know how many people are in my own position and I hate that I would upset anyone when they're already dealing with their own stuff. Thank you all a million times over.

Im 19 and i spent the night cleaning and organizing a dresser in my bedroom. I get a weird satisfaction from that kind of stuff so it was nice. I do the same kinda thing every year. (not normally cleaning, but staying in and doing stuff)

Turning down all the invites out places gets more awkward every year. Living in the UK when you don't like alcohol, pubs or drunk people is very harmful to your social life..

Subject: he is risen

As someone who moved out as a teenager, most of my posts on this subject encourage people to flip the proverbial bird and blaze their own trail. But, I am not so sure here. And, coming from me, that says quite a lot.

Don't get me wrong, I still lean heavily towards leaving, due to her eating disorder / mental health issue, but a few factors matter. How many more years of school are ahead for her? How much is her tuition a year? If she were going to med school, I'd say fuck it, take the 200K in loans, and pay it back your damn self. But, psych degrees, well, a I know a few people with those who are waiting tables. So, what's the money here? How much is school and how much is left?

Also, about moving out, at 21, it's not just narcissistic parents who would balk at that. It's not so much as moving out is the issue it's moving out with a guy. Shit happens in these scenarios, a person ends up with a broken heart, the GPA tanks... or they throw parties at their new home GPA tanks.. that's a huge investment from the parents side they are looking after. So, I'm not just hopping up and down claiming narcissism. They have points, which just haven't been discussed and probably would be accepted..
