Bug Description

When I try to open some images using Eye Of Gnome in Ubuntu 12.04 using a gnome session, the screen freezes, the mouse does not move. Ctrl+Alt+F1, F2, ecc does not work. As far as I know, the only way to unfreeze the screen is to restart gdm from a ssh session.

I report this bug here as suggested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eog/+bug/877279

I was wrong about the mouse behaviour, the mouse actually moves when the desktop is freezed (see bug 877279).
Sorry for the confusion.

not sure if that's an intel or synaptic issue...

Sebastien, do you mean synaptics (the touchpad driver)? If so, would it be useful trying to reproduce the bug having previously disabled the touchpad (by disconnecting it physically, or unloading a module, or I don't know whatelse...)

could you try with a 12.10 daily live image to see if you can reproduce the bug, and report back.

I tried to boot the 12.10 daily image but it does not boot because

"This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU"

I understand what it means, but I don't know exactly what I can do to have it working. So, please give me some hints, thank you

it means you can't install 12.10 or newer.. the kernel doesn't support your hw.

Is there any other option for me to help in troubleshooting this bug? (See my previous comment #6)
May I use an older kernel, which does not require the"pae" feature, with the 12.10 daily live image? If yes, which kernel should I choose?
I would be happy to have this bug solved (and to help in solving it), because my old hardware works fine with Ubuntu with this only drawback, and I think that one of the best advantages of Linux is to run fine on old hardware.

We're closing this bug since there has not been a response from the original reporter. However, the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. If you're not the original reporter, we'd prefer you file a new bug report.

Some tips:

  * Report X.org bugs via the command: `ubuntu-bug xorg`

  * Test against the latest development Ubuntu. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/
Bugs marked as affecting the development version tend to get priority attention.

  * The `xdiagnose` utility has functionality for enabling debugging and
analyzing a few common X problems.

  * Tag your bugs with the Ubuntu versions you have reproduced the issue in.

  * See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for tips on writing good bug reports.
