Bug Description

Ad Hoc wlan (hotspot) is completely broken for linux-image-3.2.0-27-generic at least on my particular hardware. The bug report says -24 because ubuntu-bug didn't allow me to edit that and I'm running -24 as a workaround. No problem there. I tried linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic to pinpoint the bug's appearance. It worked.

Adapter is 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (rev 34)

Snippet of syslog representative of the problem, under -27:

Mikko Rauhala, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

I tried linux-image-3.5.0-030500rc7-generic_3.5.0-030500rc7.201207142035_amd64.deb, which didn't set video mode correctly or recognize wlan or umts automatically. Didn't bother to tinker, it was built for quantal anyway.

Then tried linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc6-generic_3.4.0-030400rc6.201205061835_amd64.deb which was the latest mainline build for precise. It seems to work fine.

Also, I tried linux-image-3.2.0-26-generic to pinpoint the bug's appearance. It worked, whereas linux-image-3.2.0-27-generic still fails setting ad-hoc mode as before. (Let it be mentioned that it does seem to associate to a wlan access point and traffic goes through.)

So, the bug seems to touch only the 3.2.0-27 precise kernel and not be present at least on the 3.4.0 mainline.

Mikko Rauhala, thank you for testing the mainline kernels and better narrowing down the Ubuntu kernel version the regression appeared in.

As a potential WORKAROUND, does using ndiswrapper work for you following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper ?

Apropos noticed that the 3.4.0 rc6 I tested wasn't the latest, but the 3.4.0 release was higher in the list so I didn't notice it . The actual 3.4.0 release deb gives me bzip2 decompression error (on two separate downloads of it) when attempting install though so no test result on that...

Also, not very motivated to hunt down windows drivers and learning to tinker with ndiswrapper right now, sorry...

Apropos linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_amd64.deb, it works too. The file managed to get corrupted twice on download (over UMTS in a train, but still!), but I got a correct copy in the end.

Mikko Rauhala, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, please just make a comment to this.
