Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using feisty fawn.

This bug-report screen won't let me attach a file, but I'll attach an avi in the next step.

If I play with mplayer the audio output is perfect. mplayer reports the audio as:
Opening audio decoder: [pcm] Uncompressed PCM audio decoder
AUDIO: 16000 Hz, 1 ch, u8, 128.0 kbit/100.00% (ratio: 16000->16000)
Selected audio codec: [pcm] afm: pcm (Uncompressed PCM)

but totem plays a load of static barely overlaid with the original soundtrack.

xine also plays fine, although I am using totem-xine... go figure (xinelib 1.1.4)

Sebastian, I'm not sure what you are asking me to do. I thought I had confirmed using totem-xine and.

I'm not asking you do to anything, we just get too many bugs at the moment to work on everything and since we use totem-gstreamer and not totem-xine by default the desktop team will not work on it now. Would be nice if some bug triager or community guy having the bug would deal with upstream

I'll see what I can do.

I had the same issue with VLC.

I fixed it by...

sudo apt-get remove vlc vlc-nox (obviously totem would go here)

Then it told me of the libraries no longer in use...

libdc1394-13 libwxgtk2.6-0 libpostproc0d libdvbpsi4 libavformat0d libxosd2
  libvlc0 libwxbase2.6-0 libgsm1 libdvdnav4 libiso9660-4 libkadm55
  libavcodec0d libmodplug0c2 libtar libvcdinfo0 libmpcdec3 libsdl-image1.2

I just typed sudo apt-get remove "And pasted the info above"

The paste had a line break so it kicked i off early BUT I just ran sudo apt-get install vlc after that and it grabbed the libs and now I have no more static.

Good luck.

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the development version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron?

Thanks in advance.

Right now on a re-install of hardy heron alpha 3 now updated to the latest (with libc6 fix) totem-gstreamer can't even play the audio (mplayer can).
(I hate totem gstreamer can't show dvd menus why does it keep re-installing itself)

totem-xine plays that file just fine.

could you please check if you can reproduce the file as follows:

gst-launch-0.10 -t -v playbin uri=file:///home/user/file.avi

and attach the logs in case it doesn't play.

Thanks

That worked absolutely fine

changing to new, to send upstream by somebody having the issue, it doesn't really make sense that the sound works in gst-launch and not there

I'm wondering if the loss of audio is related to loss of alsa dmix, my pre-hardy home gnome prefences and pulse audio and multiple user logins.

I'l check into that, it may have been that totem gstreamer (which I don't use for poor dvd menu support) couldn't play ANY audio.

I'll look into it.

I'm trying to get dmix back as it seems more compatible with multi-users logins.
