Bug Description

I have a new Intel DZ77BH-55K motherboard with an i5-2400 processor with on-chip HD graphics. The motherboard has one HDMI and one DisplayPort output. For testing reasons and on the search to solve the problem I have connected both outputs to my EIZO EV2333W 23-inch 1920x1080 (16:9) monitor (HDMI to DVI via adapter, DisplayPort to DisplayPort), but I have the same problem when the DisplayPort cable is not connected.

The problem is that when I move the mouse, the cursor does not go smoothly with the movement. It goes in little jumps, as if there are small time windows (1 or 2 per second) where the mouse cursor is not updated.

Raising importance as Intel HD graphics is common in modern PCs.

Also important to say that this problem occurs under both Precise and Quantal.

It is possible that this is a hardware problem.

My board has 4 USB 3.0 ports on the back and 4 USB 2.0 ports on the back. On the front there are 2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0. On all USB 3.0 ports (also through a USB-3.0 hub) the mouse works smoothly on the 2.0 ports it is choppy. Strange, it is for sure not a USB 3.0 mouse, it is 5 years old and also why would a mouse need USB 3.0 speed?

I have my PC back after a warranty repair (mainboard replaced) and update to the newest BIOS version. The problem still persists.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I followed your link and tested the kernel

linux-image-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic_3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056_amd64.deb
linux-image-extra-3.6.0-030600rc1-generic_3.6.0-030600rc1.201208022056_amd64.deb

and I have still the choppy mouse when it is connected to a USB-2.0 port.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

Please follow the instructions on the wiki page[0]. The first step is to email the appropriate mailing list. If no response is received, then a bug may be opened on bugzilla.kernel.org.

It is very likely, that this is a "Connection probing causes stalls" bug.

You can try "drm.debug=0x02" as kernel parameter. You get in kern.log events.
You can try the "disable polling" workaround.

Till Kamppeter, would you mind testing Trusty for the latest kernel, xorg, and input stacks via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?

As well, if reproducible, could you please test the latest mainline kernel via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12-trusty/ and advise on the results?
