Bug Description

As the Recommends on btrfs has been removed from ceph (due to stability questions over btrfs) we should probably add a Recommends on xfsprogs and XFS is currently the recommended underlying filesystem for ceph.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10
Package: ceph 0.48-1ubuntu2
ProcVersionSignature: User Name 3.5.0-6.6-generic 3.5.0
Uname: Linux 3.5.0-6-generic x86_64
Architecture: amd64
Date: Wed Jul 25 16:02:41 2012
SourcePackage: ceph
UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install)

Why XFS? It's dead slow on metadata operations, and AFAIK ext4 beats it on most points, performance *and* reliability-wise

Mainly because its the recommendation of the ceph team upstream:

  http://ceph.com/docs/master/config-cluster/file-system-recommendations/

I think the default would still be ext4 (as this does not required a separate device/filesystem).

Given that we have ceph 0.48 in Quantal, which uses leveldb for the xattrs, perhaps ext4 is in fact going to be the preferred FS going forward. Either way, this seems like a Medium priority.

The basic testing I have done with ceph on XFS and ext4 would confirm RoyK's opinion on use of XFS - it appeared to be alot slower that ext4.

Performance was assessed on the same cloud instances using the different underlying filesystem formats; the rest-bench tool was used to gather performance metrics.

I think its still worth noting the option of using XFS - how about a 'Suggests' rather than 'Recommends'?

This bug was fixed in the package ceph - 0.54-0ubuntu1

---------------
ceph (0.54-0ubuntu1) raring; urgency=low

  * New upstream release, preview for next upstream LTS release
    (LP: #1056462):
    - d/librbd-dev.install: Pickup new features.h file.
    - d/control: Suggest parted to support upstart integration.
    - d/{control,obsync.install}: Drop obsync package inline with
      upstream.
    - d/control: Add xfsprogs to Depends for ceph to support XFS
      as default filesystem (LP: #1028981).
    - d/patches/*: Drop all patches; either included upstream or
      no longer required.
    - d/ceph.lintian-overrides: Added additional overrides for
      new rados class libraries.
  * d/watch: Switch back to using distributed tarball's rather than
pulling from github so that version resolution works correctly
    (LP: #1079941).
  * Tidied up redundant packaging files from debian directory.
