Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Sound playback only works I select (the new option) "multichannel playback" in (the new) gnome sound configuration. "Auto" doesn't seem to work. This made me think sound output was broken, though it actually was for some other people in Bug 94333.

When you have "Auto" selected, do you get sound when you plug the speakers in to the onboard sound?

Now that the 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon release of Ubuntu is out, we were wondering if you can still reproduce this issue. Could you please download and try the new version of Ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and report back your results. Thanks again and we appreciate your help and feedback.

I can confirm this bug on the latest Hardy Heron (alpha 5 + updates as per 2008-03-01).

Sound playback only works (doesn't work that good) if I select "multichannel playback".

Care to attach the ouput of running alsa-info.sh as mentioned here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Also note that we'll keep this report open against the actively developed kernel but against 2.6.20 this will be closed as it does not qualify for a stable release update. Thanks.

Seems to be fixed since the official release. If no one has any complaints, I suggest the bug be closed.

No, it's not fixed for me. I still see the same behaviour with the released Ubuntu 8.04 version. Without changes to the configuration sound isn't working at all.

What I do see is that now I can select "ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback" and it (somewhat) also works, and I can play multiple streams.

My solution was to install a small program to configure pulseaudio from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4823171 - now it works. But with an unaltered default install I don't hear any sound.

I'm actually still having the problem. I must have been mistaken before?

Any word on a permanent fix?

The problem seems to be fixed when I disable my onboard soundcard and use only the soundblaster.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Hey, people, I've got ubuntu 8.10 Interpid Ibex on my PC and a Sound Blaster Live! CT4670. I've selected ALSA Multichannel for my card, but there is a trouble - Playback is only single-channel! :(
And also when the processor is fully loaded, playback is being fragmented...

Please help. Thanks.
