Frequent crashes when "Changing Calibres Behaviour"

Bug #1016881 reported by Colin Clarke

Bug Description

Windows XP (32 bit)

After installing 0.8.57 the occasional crashes have become frequent. Adding an e-mail address took ~ 20 trys, crashing before I could apply the new address.

Virtually any attempt to customise crashed while trying to make the change, or very shortly after applying a change.

Windows crash accomp file attached for the last (change to multiple author parsing string).

Actions:
For this crash, I went to Tweaks and added to |; to the default string.
After pressing apply, there was a pause and then the program crashed.
The change had been applied when I restarted Calibre (it didn't achieve what I wanted though)

Go to preferences->Look & Feel and change the user interface style to
default. And/or downgrade to calibre 0.8.55. Something on your system is
incompatible with either the new style or Qt 4.8.2. Old releases of
calibre are available here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/calibre/files/

Changed in calibre:
status: New → Invalid

Hi Kovid,
Thanks for the response!! Actually, I did not, because a) the system that the solution was referring to was XP x86 whereas mine is Win7 x64, and b) because in the reports I also got the 'Problem Event Name: BEX' and thought I might forward it to you so you know it's not only the 'Problem Event Name: APPCRASH'.
Do you still think I should apply your proposed solution?

Kind regards,
Constantin, (registered user)

P.S.
I was thinking that perhaps it would be good to have another feature (i.e. feature request). This could be at the 'Edit metadata individually' window, where, I think, a button next to the Series field (just as you have wisely put a button next to Title and Author) by which user could jump directly to editing the series.
I also think that perhaps, if possible, you could add the search function/field, at the 'Category editor', 'Manage Publishers' and 'Manage Tags' so user could directly search for a series, publisher or tag to edit, rather than scrolling.

If it helps, I may add that I installed QuickTime as the other used
suggested, but this did not solve the issue.
I may also add that this behaviour was like the program was "searching"
for something and froze on the way to get it. It would happen when the
program sought to write values for a book, or show values for a book.
Anyway, worry NOT, we love you and the program and we are happy as it is.

kater (kater) wrote : Re: [Bug 1016881] Re: calibre bug 1016881

Yes, the edit metadata window shows the same behaviour, but with less
frequency in this build. The metadata window would cause the program to
crash after a number of books, not always standard. For example it did
it to me now, after editing 34 books, straight without any problems. On
book 35, it crashed. Funilly, it popped up a never-before seen error
window, but it was to fast and so i could not read what it said.
So, it is not as consistent to replicate the error as it is when
searching or when copy-paste to the search field.
The previous build of calibre would crash also when directly editing
metadata (e.g. copy-paste values), but I did not test it with the
current build.
  Hope this helps man,

Constantin

Yes, I individually removed each user plugin, restarted Calibre, continued making metadata modifications to books in the library. A crash would soon occur and I would remove the next plugin with the same results. Eventually all plugins were removed and the crashes continued to occur.

Thanks,

One more thing to try. Try hiding the Tag Browser (click the little luggage tag icon in the bottom right of th amin calibre window). See if that prevents the crashes.

Title:
Frequent crashes when "Changing Calibres Behaviour"

Status in calibre: e-book management:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Windows XP (32 bit)

After installing 0.8.57 the occasional crashes have become frequent.
Adding an e-mail address took ~ 20 trys, crashing before I could apply
  the new address.

Virtually any attempt to customise crashed while trying to make the
change, or very shortly after applying a change.

Windows crash accomp file attached for the last (change to multiple
  author parsing string).

  Actions:
For this crash, I went to Tweaks and added to |; to the default string.
After pressing apply, there was a pause and then the program crashed.
The change had been applied when I restarted Calibre (it didn't achieve what I wanted though)

Thanks Kovid for the prompt and swift response.
Is there a way to save my settings as to restore them after the clean
install?
I mean I hate to lose all the nice customisations and settings...

Thanks!

Dear Kovid,
I just had an idea about the reason of this problem and although it may
be stupid, I though I might as well share it with you.
Could it be that if user has a very large number of books, then the
program functions / db / cache, you name it, somehow floods and cannot
properly handle the search, display (or whatever) info and therefore it
hangs?
Again, this is just my hunch, call it a stupid idea if you like, just
though it might give you another point of view.

No, it isn;t that simple. As I said, I tried with your db on my windows
machine and did not get crashes. But, if you like you can test that
hypothesis yourself by creating a seconf small library and working with
that. It may be that if the crash is timing related, that will affect
it.

It "feels" like the program hangs when trying to read/write information...

I had one other idea, it may be that you have some other program installed on your computers that has its own copy of the Qt DLLs in a version that is incompatible with calibre's copy. If you have the path to that programs' install directory in your PATH variable, then the incorrect DLLs might be loaded. One example of such a program is MikTeX. Check the value of your PATH variable. You can do that with

echo %PATH%

in a command prompt.

Hi Kovid,
Sorry I could not respond earlier to your mail, but I had taken my son
to his summer vacations and was away from my computer.
Since I do not have your technical expertise, could you please try to be
more specific as to the command?
Fact of the matter is that indeed I have at least 3 files with the same
name in my system, all in different sizes, used by different programs,
so this could indeed be the case.
But please do be more specific (i.e. instructions) as regards the DOS
command.

Kind and best regards,
Constantin,

You dont have to use a DOS command you can do it via the windows control panel as well, here are some instructions: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/path.xml

Basically remove any directories that contain Qt DLLs from the PATH, the restart your computer and try running calibre and see if it makes a difference.

Dear Kovid,
I have a large number of books and so, when I try to start Calibre it
takes a long time to start, and when it does, it consumes ~670MB of
memory. This per se is not a problem, but when I try to edit book tags,
titles, authors, etc., it really takes a very long time, although I have
still a lot (~8GB) of free memory.
If you don't mind this very much, could you please see to it too?
