Conflict between NTP and NTPDATE

Bug Description

Hi,

if you select time synchronisation over the internet, NTP must be installed (offered in the dialog) . This results in a waiting loop (1 minute) after log in.
I found a hint in the internet concerning NTP and NTPDATE. Therefore I deinstalled NTPDATE, AFAIK installed per default. After this the waiting loop is gone.
Think that the package manager should do this automatically.

BS: Xubuntu 12.04

Regards

Have you tried reinstalling ntpdate to check it's really its fault? I don't see how it could create delays when logging in. Also please attach /var/log/daemon.log and ~/.xsession-errors when the problem happens.

affects: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) → ntp (Ubuntu)

Please also paste the output of:

Thanks!

After several restarts I thought that there must be another behavior which causes the loop. I don't payed attention, that I had changed the login to using password. In this case the loop exists. Without password I had no loop with and without NTPDATE for several restarts.

But with the last restart I had a loop with login without password. I deinstalled NTPDATE and had no loop after restart.

Strange behaviour. I give up as these things are to heavy for me.

Adding syslog as attachement where you can see the time leaks.

Could you have a look to find out what was/is process 1681?

Please also attach ~/.xsession-errors.

Meanwhile I had installed Ubuntu: As the unity desktop is not my thing I installed Xubuntu again and found two reasons for the time leaks in the syslog, but not at the same starts of OS.

1. Setting of IPv6 in the networkmanager. I set it to 'ignore'.
2. NTP Server in 'ntp.conf'. I changed it to this:

server ptbtime1.ptb.de
server ptbtime2.ptb.de
server ptbtime3.ptb.de

# Use Ubuntu's ntp server as a fallback.
# server de.pool.ntp.org

Since deactivating the fallback server Xubuntu starts without loop about fifty times till now.

Not really the reason. After user log out and log in, which I do rarely, the loop comes back.

May be: Installing Xubuntu I used the home-partition of ubuntu. Before I deleted most of the files and directories meaning that they are relevant for the unity desktop.

Now I will do it again and leave only those applications, which have nothing to do with the system. E.g. Firefox and Thunderbird profiles.
