Please provide information about the version of Inkscape installed: see Inkscape menu 'Help > About Inkscape' for details.

Does the directory (path) you entered into the 'Autosave' setting in the preferences exist?
Note: Inkscape does not create the directory itself if it doesn't exists yet (bug #490338)

The directory path exists. It was entered in the preferences and no autosaving occurred.

Note: if there have been no changes to the current document, there is nothing to save (neither with 'Ctrl+S' nor for Autosave). The message in the status bar will tell this when trying to save (e.g. with 'Ctrl+S') an unchanged document. If you want to force a save for an unedited file, you need to either use 'Save as' ('Shift+Ctrl+S') and overwrite the existing file or "dirty" the current document (e.g. by adding a random object and deleting it again, or by toggling the visibility of a layer, or by showing and hiding the grid again).

The next major version will use an Asterisk in the title bar to denote a modified document (see bug #294354).

Inkscape 0.48.2 on Windows does have a known regression, triggered by opening/saving files from/to the root of a drive, tracked in
Bug #805095 "no File->Save As... dialog box if previously opened a file from root directory of a drive"
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/805095>

If your problems persist for files with obvious changes in the current editing session which do not get saved back to the same file, you could test if your issues are related to that known regression, and either …

… download and install Inkscape 0.48.3.1 (which has that bug fixed) from
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/inkscape/0.48.3.1/>
(this latest bug-fix release has not yet been officially announced because we are waiting for the packages for other platforms to be available first)

… or reset the preferences to default values (quit Inkscape, delete or rename "%APPDATA%\inkscape\preferences.xml", launch Inkscape again), and avoid saving or opening files from the root of a drive as long as you work with Inkscape 0.48.2 on Windows.

… or open a file _not_ in the root of a drive via context menu of the explorer in Inkscape ('Open with Inkscape…'), save it again after a small edit, save it as (with a new file name), and save a copy as (to reset the paths stored in the preferences file for the various save operations), and after that avoid saving or opening files from the root of a drive as long as you work with Inkscape 0.48.2 on Windows.

There were changes, and still neither save method worked in 0.48.2, but through your list I discovered it is the windows regression bug.

I followed this:
"… or open a file _not_ in the root of a drive via context menu of the explorer in Inkscape ('Open with Inkscape…'), save it again after a small edit, save it as (with a new file name), and save a copy as (to reset the paths stored in the preferences file for the various save operations), and after that avoid saving or opening files from the root of a drive as long as you work with Inkscape 0.48.2 on Windows."
And that worked.

I also installed 0.48.3.1 and the fixes work.

Thank you!
