Bug Description

- Open file.xls (originally created with gnumeric).
- Make a change or two.
- Click the Save button. Maybe even click it twice.
- Click the window manager 'x' button to close the app.

Get a dialog saying the workbook needs to be saved. Huh? But I clicked the Save button twice already!

- Dismiss the dialog.
- Click Save two more times.
- Click the window manager 'x' again.

This time it exits without a warning.

Why do I need to click Save four times before it finally saves? What are the first three doing?

Correction: it's not clicking 4 times that it needs. I tried clicking 6 times this time, and it still prompted me. It seems like what it needs is to show the "workbook needs to be saved" dialog; once the dialog has been shown, clicking the Save button a couple of times does the trick. It seems that before the dialog has been shown, the button is just a no-op.

Hi, I am one of the upstream Gnumeric developers. We cannot replicate your problem (but none of us is running Ubuntu 12.04). So perhaps you would answer a few questions. Note that we are only asking about the very first click on the save button.

First you open the file file.xls.
Does the window title now show "file-xls - Gnumeric" and nothing else?
Then you edit some cell in the file.
Does the window title now show "*file-xls - Gnumeric" and nothing else?
Then you click on the save button once.
Does the window title now show "file-xls - Gnumeric" and nothing else?

Thank you

Sorry for the delay - launchpad didn't send me email about your question so I just now saw it.

Open file.xls: titlebar shows "file.xls - Gnumeric".
Make a change (e.g. add a row); titlebar shows "*File.xls - Gnumeric" (it added a star to show it was modified).
Click on the Save button once: titlebar now shows "file.xls - Gnumeric" (the star went away, document isn't modified/dirty any more).
Click the windowmanager x, and I get the confirmation dialog.

If the stars goes away that should mean the file has been saved. So there does not seem to be an issue with save button. The question is why does the confirmation dialog appear?

Do you have the same problem with .gnumeric files and other .xls files?

It happens with multiple .xls files, and still happens if I save to .gnumeric, quit, open file.gnumeric, change one cell, click Save, then click the x to close the window. So it doesn't seem related to format.

In fact, you don't even need a file. Run gnumeric with no arguments. Enter a in cell a1, then click Save. The Save as dialog comes up; choose a filename, leave the format as .gnumeric and let it save to filename.gnumeric. Then click the windowmanager x. The confirmation dialog comes up.
