Bug Description

When using ppa:vanvugt/compiz-preproposed, which contains the fix for bug #862430 in Ubuntu 12.04, selecting "Centered" from the Place Windows plugin only centers windows horizontally, but not vertically. This was working fine before adding the ppa. I have an Intel GM965 graphics card.

What happens if you disable decorations? killall -9 gtk-window-decorator

With killall -9 I get the "no process found" message from the terminal, so I disabled the window decorations with CCSM, but this problem is still happening.

Could you test this again? I recently fixed bug 1002606 which is probably related to this one.

I did the same as before - disabling window decorations in CCSM - and I tried to open new windows, and while some applications open centered both horizontally and vertically (like Gcalc), lots of others don't (like Nautilus, Terminal, System Settings, CCSM), even after restarting both Unity and Compiz after disabling decorations.

I just noticed that though I'm using Compiz 0.9.8 r3110 (which there's no doubt I'm using since there's no windows flickering) the terminal claims it's 0.9.7.8. Is it possible that somehow I'm running the wrong version?

I just upgraded compiz-plugins-default (0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2, 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.1), compiz-gnome (0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2, 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.1), compiz-plugins (0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2, 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.1), libdecoration0 (0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2, 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.1), and compiz-core (0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2, 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.1) but not the "compiz" package and this problem is now gone.

I'm also using compiz 1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1vvpreproposed2 and the bug affects mee too. I don't see a pattern which windows are placed correctly and which not.
- Here are some correctly placed windows:
xfce4-terminal
kcalc
ksnapshot
- And some incorrect ones:
Vuze's Open Torrent dialog
K3b DVD burning window
Konsole

My window decorator is an emerald that I've compiled myself.
One other thing: the Smart Placement Method also does not center vertically.

I think I got it. If a window is vertically centered correctly depends on the window's width.
By starting:
xfce4-terminal --geometry=80x24
the window is well centered but if you start increasing it's width the window progressively moves upward (I mean appears upper at startup than it should, it doesn't move by itself). For 110x24 it touches my upper panel.
Changing the window's height behaves correctly.
Weird bug.
