It is best to 1. not touch the system when wipe free space is in progress. 2. do it under safe mode where there is very limit drivers/processes running, which reduces what can/will get in the way.
I would suggest instead, you put your system in safe mode and then wipe free space at a time you will not be using your PC, like when you are sleeping.
