A pity indeed that such a visible bug affecting the use of a productivity suite with the default Ubuntu desktop of a LTS edition appears very difficult to resolve. This essentially breaks Unity.
I like Unity because of its efficient use of screen real estate. Unity-2D does not have the issue, so using it is my workaround for the time being.
